Home Home Page Front Page Wright: Chelsea must be more ‘ruthless’ to get top four
Ian Wright has insisted that Chelsea have to be more ruthless in front of goal to finish in the top four this season.
The Blues extended their unbeaten run to nine games in all competitions with Saturday’s win over Newcastle United.
A goal either side of half time from Federico Fernandez (OG) and Tammy Abraham earned Frank Lampard’s side all three points at St James’ Park.
Chelsea were well in control against Newcastle, and they should have won more comfortably. They had over 70% possession and 14 shots, but only three of them were on target.
The Blues have been prolific in front of goal this season. They are the top scorers in the Premier League with 22 goals from nine outings.
Wright spoke to the BBC, as cited by The Metro, after the game and he warned Chelsea about being more ruthless in attacking areas:
“It could’ve been too comfortable there. Like Frank said they missed chances and they need to be a lot more ruthless if they are going to go on and get into that top four, or really challenge simply because it could have been a lot easier than it was.
“You can go to a place like Newcastle and if you are that wasteful they can get you and come back and maybe nick one.
“I think today I thought Tammy was a lot better with his movement. He got his goal in the end and Timo Werner he was kind of wasteful with the kind of chances that we know he normally will take. But other than that it could’ve been a lot more comfortable.”
“This is a real test for Liverpool simply because of who is missing.”
“Because even Diego Maradona in ’86, the team wasn’t built around him. He had unbelievable players.”
Ian Wright: “He should have forced himself by now, especially with Laca.”
Ian Wright and Ashley Cole are irked by the pointless criticism of Mason Mount that surrounds every England game.
Arsenal have scored just nine goals in their opening eight games and Aubameyang has been singled out for criticism.
Former striker Ian Wright has criticised Arsenal’s players following their surprising loss at the hands of Aston Villa.
Chelsea are now title contenders and so they should be after their summer of spending…
Man City are the big climbers from last season while United go the other way. What else is there?
Klopp predicts an ‘open title race’, but how do the current standings compare to past seasons? Favourably with 2015-16…
Phil Jones deserves better than the injuries but also the memes, the ridicule and the blame.
Tottenham could play straight through Man City on the counter-attack. Or be penned in and make mistakes.
