UCLA has dismissed runner Chris Weiland from their track and cross country teams for video and text messages containing racist and homophobic insults

Unclear exactly when the video was recorded – but it’s bad. While the footage went viral, Weiland can be seen and heard holding a woman over a girl he believes cheated on him

During the conversation that takes place in a car at night, Weiland knocks down his lover’s other man Call him the n-word and the homophobic f-word

When Weiland complains to the woman about the call, he says that his lover “wants to be with this king who has no future”She’s going to be with a stupid guy who’s going to be in community college all his life”

When the woman on the call urges Weiland to calm down and control his emotions, Weiland threatens to “hit” the other man

The video of the conversation was posted on Instagram this week, and it quickly came up – with UCLA star athletes including gymnast Margzetta Frazier urging the university to act quickly

Weiland allegedly sent text messages to his ex-lover in similar offensive language. These text messages were also posted on social media

UCLA coach Avery Anderson issued a statement Monday saying Weiland had been fired from the program

But Avery also confirms that he knew about the video months ago – and suspended it – before finally allowing Weiland back on track and the cross country teams

“When I first found out about this a few months ago, I was disgusted and immediately suspended him from the team indefinitely,” said Anderson

Why was he hired again? Anderson says he wanted to give Weiland the opportunity to learn from his mistakes and grow

“Even in my disgust as a coach, my intention is always to lead, educate, and make the change I want to see in this world. I can talk about changing the world or I can do the work invest in it And that’s what I’ve been doing with this person over the last few months. In January I decided to take him back to the team “

“After team members and the sports community expressed their concern, it became clear that his continued commitment to the team was inconsistent with the culture of mutual support and respect we foster. I now understand the Decision to reinstate him was not the right decision and that today’s action is best for the good of our team “

Weiland was listed as a senior on UCLA’s official website – and only participated in the program at the Dave Murray Invitational in Tucson last week
