There are tons of NFL memories we will all have on Thanksgiving, but when you think of John Madden calling games on vacation, you could associate him with one word: turducken

This is the Frankenstein-like combination of duck, chicken and turkey that gives the eater a foretaste

It was 20 years ago when Madden first tried the turduck and got him to talk about it in the air and show it off during many Thanksgiving games He popularized a dish that was popular in Louisiana before thousands of turduckens were shipped around the world

Let’s go back further than 1997 for a second. First, one has to wonder where the turducken came from. The story is not entirely clear

Paul Prudhomme, the famous Louisiana chef who passed away in 2015, claims he invented it in the 1960s while working in Wyoming. Here is part of the claim from a 1994 Times-Picayune article , which was printed on NOLA com:

The original turducken was introduced here in the 1970s by Chef Paul Prudhomme. He invented the concept a decade earlier in Sheridan, Wyo while you were working on a restaurant buffet and carving meat. Everything looked pretty except for the turkey, So he said The inventive chef set out to create something bang-out. In the end, he had three birds, each with its own association. Upon his return to New Orleans, Prudhomme gave him his name and copyrighted Turducken 1986

“It’s this wild imagination that I have and the physical abuse I give myself to make this possible,” he explained to creation. “One of the greatest joys of my life has been doing things like the turdukes to be able to make people happy. It’s a huge effort, but once you’ve tried it, it’s literally the best ”

But there is also a story that in 1985 a farmer came to Heberts Spezialfleisch and asked that the store combine all three chickens

And this is where Glenn Mistich comes in. Mistich’s wife, Leah, comes from the family that belonged to Hebert, and he opened his gourmet butcher block in 1994 where he boned the trio of birds with a clever knife, with different types of fillings in between and sewed them together

He told For The Win that before Madden popularized the turdukes, Madden was selling 250 of them a year

Then, in 1997, he heard longtime radio personality Bob Delgiorno speak in the air about getting Madden to try the dish before the Hall of Famer was supposed to broadcast a Rams Saints game from the Superdome, Delgiorno told For The Win, that he interviewed Madden a few times on his show and that Mistich promoted the turdukes on the station

“Bob got in touch and we went to the Superdome,” recalled Mistich. “Madden grabbed a piece of it in his hands and fell in love with it”

Madden, who declined an interview request from For The Win, confirmed it was true of the New York Times in 2002

“‘ The PR. Guy for the saints brought me one and he brought it to the booth. It smelled and looked so good. I didn’t have any plates, cutlery or anything and just started eating it with my hands

“I’m there eating that turducken with my fingers,” recalled Madden, “(Holy Owner) Tom Benson comes in and I have all this stuff on my fingers and do the thing in my head that makes me wonder: “Do I shake his hand? “

(For the record: Madden shook hands with Benson, sticky fingers and everything, and he said the two of them haven’t spoken since)

“I really loved it,” he recalled Madden “Can you send me one in California?”

Two weeks later, a FOX camera crew was in his shop because Madden chose Turduckens as the official meal for the “All-Madden Team.” He estimates he’ll be selling between five and six thousand Turduckens this year, two of them himself to be delivered to Madden

“I’m very grateful,” added Mistich, “I can’t say enough about what he’s done for our business. He definitely put it nationally. Turducken is even in the dictionary now”

Charles is a writer for For The Win He once dropped a light foul ball at Shea Stadium and was 35000 angry Mets fans booed (and never recovered)
