Newman spoke about her trans daughter in a House Floor speech in support of the LGBTQ Equality Rights Act Greene later became involved in a personal transphobic attack

WASHINGTON – To understand this story about Thursday’s vote on transgender rights law, you must first know that freshmen Rep. Marie Newman, D-Ill, and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Gas are neighbors on the other side of the road Hall in the office building of Longworth House

So much so that Democrats, who control the House, stripped her of committee duties after the QAnon Conspiracy Booster and 9-11 Denier threatened the execution of Democrats, spread anti-Semitic tropes and unsubstantiated claims about it set up staged shootings at school

On Tuesday, Newman gave a passionate speech on the floor of the house to support the passage of the LGBTQ Anti-Discrimination Equality Act

The equality law is needed, Newman said in her speech, because from the day Evie “came out to her parents as a transgender” that she “could be discriminated against just because she is

“And yet it was the happiest day of my life and my daughter has found her authentic self”

Later on Tuesday, Newman tweeted a clip from that speech, adding, “I am voting to pass the Equality Act for my daughter – the strongest, bravest person I know”

That prompted Newman to place the light blue and pink transgender flag next to the Illinois state flag outside her office on Wednesday afternoon – where Greene would be sure to see it

Newman wrote in an afternoon tweet above a video she was flying the flag, “I thought we were going to fly our transgender flag so she could look at it every time she opened her door”

A short time later, Greene tweeted in response, “As mothers, we all love and support our children, but your birth son does NOT belong in my daughters’ bathrooms, locker rooms, and sports teams”

Though Newman got this ball rolling by planting the Trans flag – a symbol – Greene knew, or should have known, how hurtful it can be to make her blunt message specifically about Newman’s child

A few hours later, Greene escalated by putting a sign outside her door that read “There are Two Genders” Male & Female “Trust science,” Greene said

That this message was addressed to the mother of a trans child was more than a matter of political dispute. What kind of callous person does this make?

Greene said in a tweet about her sign, “Our neighbor, @RepMarieNewman, wants to pass what is known as the ‘Equality Act’ to destroy women’s rights and religious freedom I thought we’d put ours up to make them feel like it every time can see when she opens her door ”

By the way, Greene doesn’t trust science – she had to be forced to wear a COVID mask on the floor of the house

It’s not that Newman didn’t try to meet Greene when they both came to convention they did

Earlier this month, when Greene made a February 4 speech out of the house where she was trying not to get fired from her committees – she eventually accepted the Sept. 11 attacks September took place – she tried to position herself as misunderstood

Like a lot of what Greene said wasn’t quite right I spoke to Newman on February 4 and asked her – in the wake of what Greene said about not knowing Democrats – if she’d met her office mate

Newman said, “We met several times and I would say, ‘Hello, how are you? How are you? “And she just refused to acknowledge me and I know for sure that she knew who I was and that I was her neighbor. I had no interaction because she refuses to interact”

And to add another wrinkle, Facebook removed Newman’s video on Thursday, “Facebook took down our video of me hoisting the transgender flag in front of my office and labeled it as” hate speech “” In the meantime, allow they still have the transphobic video by Marjorie Taylor Greene posted, Facebook put it back and told Newman that it was mistakenly removed
