HARRISBURG, Pa. (KDKA) – A local Democratic senator rated the most eligible to vote by the state was denied his seat in the Pennsylvania Senate on a violent swearing-in day in the state capital of Harrisburg

Senate Republicans who hold the majority refused to let Pa Sen McKeesport’s Jim Brewster takes the oath of office When Lt Gov John Fetterman, a Democrat, came on Brewster’s defense and the Republicans removed him as chairman

The day began with Fetterman as President of the Senate, but when Republican senators tried to deny the right to take the oath of office, Democrat Brewster, who was certified by 69 votes more than his Republican challenger, intervened >

“The Ayes are 14 and the Nays are 11,” declared Republican President Pro Tempore Jake Corman, “and the lieutenant governor has been removed from the Senate for the day””

Fetterman kept repeating: “The chair won’t step down the podium, the chair won’t step down the podium, the chair won’t step down the podium”

Fetterman wouldn’t move, but Corman stepped up from another podium while the Democrats read out the results for Brewster

When Fetterman asked Brewster to take the oath, Corman refused to have Senators sworn in with Brewster present

“I wanted the rest of the senators to be sworn in here with their families and, in some cases, their children,” Brewster told KDKA Political Editor Jon Delano after the event

“I was disappointed and amazed that you removed the lieutenant governor I think that’s a step that went too far,” he said

Brewster, who says the democratic process has been marred by the actions of the Senate today, believes he will eventually sit down

“I’m disappointed it didn’t happen, but at some point they have to do that The election is over We won the election We have more votes,” he said

But Nicole Ziccarelli, the Republican challenger who was in Harrisburg, is hoping the Senate Republicans will ultimately use her by disqualifying postal ballot papers with undated envelopes that the state’s Supreme Court has already approved

“I won the Senate District 45 election after counting all of the legal ballots,” she says

In a statement late Tuesday, the Senate Republican caucus accused Fetterman of “invading” the Senate order and decency and said they were acting without partiality

In another lawsuit related to this election, a federal judge is expected to rule on the legality of the ballot papers soon

“Republicans in Pennsylvania and nationally have spread disinformation, undermining the democratic process Sen Jim Brewster is rightly 45th Senate District won, but Senate Republicans are ignoring district voters and refusing to swear in as Senator. This is a shameful takeover that puts the institution to shame

“It’s just unethical and undemocratic to leave the district without a vote just because Republicans don’t like the election result. Voters, not Harrisburg politicians, ruled this election, and Sen.” Brewster is the rightful winner

“All ballots have been counted and certified, and the results are correct Sen Brewster received the most votes in the race and should stand as Senator for 45th District to be sworn in There is no precedent or legal rationale for it not to be

“I will do everything in my power to ensure that voters have the final say in the elections”

John Fetterman
