TV news veteran Katie Couric has faced backlash on social media after suggesting that members of President Trump’s “cult” “be deprogrammed” during an appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher” / P>

Ms. Couric made her comments after Mr. Maher said he was more concerned about the “loons” in Congress than about the Trump supporters who stormed the U.S Capitol in Jan 6 riot

“Because I mean what are you doing with these people? There are 147 Republicans in Congress who are still not admitting Trump lost the election, “said Mr. Said Maher, “What do you do with people in government who don’t believe in the way we govern?”

“It’s so shocking,” Ms. Couric replied, “Not only are you not admitting, Bill, but there are thoughts that there may have been collusion among members of Congress, some refusing to go through magnetometers or how however you call them to look for guns they don’t wear masks during the siege I mean, it’s really bizarre, isn’t it, considering how AWOL got so many of these congressmen

“But I also think some of them believe the rubbish they get from their constituencies 24/7 on the internet, and they subscribe to that big lie,” she continued. “And the question is how we’re really going to almost deprogram these people who signed up for the Trump cult ”

Ms. Couric added that she was the second impeachment of Dr Trump said the president “instigated violence” and “you can’t let that stand””

At one point on the show, Ms. Couric compared Sen Mitt Romney, Republican from Utah, to Nelson Mandela

“He seems like an incredible statesman now for speaking out against the president,” she said

“Katie has” withdrawn from all “objective” reporting duties, “” he told Fox News. “She was a long time partisan”

“Katie Couric who makes such offensive comments is no surprise. She is part of a media complex that has purposely suppressed the flow of information that was negative for Biden in order to interfere in the elections,” said the professor and media critic at Cornell Law School, William A Jacobson told Fox News
