Pennsylvania Lt Gov John Fetterman officially announced on Monday what has been evident since his unsuccessful first campaign for US Senate: He’s trying again

Fetterman, who kicked off his campaign with a video for supporters, is the first officially declared lead candidate in a bi-party crowded field by 2022. He joins the unions’ main democratic publicity, a campaign account valued at nearly $ 1 has grown 5 million since telling The Inquirer last month he was considering becoming a candidate and a progressive track record

“I didn’t just show up at this dance,” said Fetterman, who began his political career as Mayor of Braddock outside of Pittsburgh in 2005. “The Democratic Party has clearly moved in my direction rather than straying from my direction. And that’s because I’ve always come across what I believe and know is true even when it’s not popular ”

Despite his unabashedly liberal profile, Fetterman’s announcement video makes clear his hope that he can also win the support of former Trump voters

“These places all over Pennsylvania feel left behind. They don’t feel part of the conversation,” he says at one point. “That’s why Donald Trump went to these little counties and held these big rallies we can’t afford to vote for to take for granted We cannot afford to take a place for granted ”

Fetterman, a proponent of full marijuana legalization, noted he was the only candidate in the 2016 primary to advance that position, Katie McGinty won the nomination that year before losing the general election to Sen. Pat Toomey , a Lehigh Valley Republican not seeking a third term

During an interview this weekend, Fetterman repeatedly opposed labeling policies like raising the federal minimum wage as “progressive,” instead advocating such positions, including his longstanding advocacy of LGBTQ rights, as moral and reasonable

Toomey’s resignation has sparked great interest among potential candidates from both parties. The race is already in the national spotlight and is likely to spend tens, if not hundreds, of millions of dollars on the winner will help determine if the Democrats are in control of an evenly divided one Retain Senate, in which Vice President Kamala Harris holds the decisive vote

Midterm elections historically favor the party that doesn’t hold the White House, and the race will serve as a referendum for President Joe Biden’s first two years in office

Both parties face internal disputes over their own futures, with Democrats split between progressives and moderates, and Republicans split over former President Donald Trump – with most applauding his policies but some rejecting it in favor of more traditional conservatism

Fetterman said he respects many of the potential Democratic candidates. Among those who are considering running for the seat is U.S. Rep Chrissy Houlahan of Chester County, US. Rep Conor Lamb from Allegheny County, US. Rep Brendan Boyle of Philadelphia, Val Arkoosh, Montgomery County Commissioner, and Rep Malcolm Kenyatta of Philadelphia

“But I’m the only one who has run nationwide and won,” said Fetterman, noting that he and Gov Tom Wolf won re-election in 2018 with 17 percentage points

Fetterman has built his national profile in recent years, emerging as a prominent defender of Pennsylvania’s election results in the past few months, with frequent appearances on national television

He shook off the traditional headwinds of mid-term elections and called himself a “67 counties candidate” who can garner votes in more rural parts of the state, not just the big cities and the surrounding suburbs. He was in many of these areas 2018 envoy from Wolf

“I warned Democrats while Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are critical, the small counties are important too,” he said, “It’s never urban or rural It has to be urban and rural”

“John Fetterman’s looks are nothing more than a gimmick,” said Mark Harris, GOP strategist and top Toomey advisor. “He’s not a biker, working class, or worker – as he would like you to believe. He is one spoiled trustee baby adored at the altar by hardcore leftists like Bernie Sanders. In the end, this gimmick will fall flat and the Pennsylvanians will reject Fetterman ”

Fetterman and his wife Gisele Barreto Fetterman included their life story in his position on immigration. She came to the US. as an undocumented immigrant from Brazil with her family as a child

“I always rely on her position because she is so close,” he said, “That was the truth that she lived”

The couple, who know their way around social media, have cultivated a self-deprecating public partnership – their huge, 6-foot-8 tattooed frame and penchant for work clothes rather than suits, theirs is more stylish in comparison and smaller in its upcoming campaign sent a donation letter from her Saturday entitled “Pothead Second Lady” explaining how medical marijuana has helped her chronic back pain

Fetterman supports Biden’s $ 19 trillion coronavirus bailout package but is dismayed that a proposal to raise the minimum wage to $ 15 if carried on through the so-called budget reconciliation process without Republican support will be cut, and he turned down Republican complaints about reconciliation – a Senate process that allows some laws to be passed by a mere majority – noting that the Republicans had adopted large tax cuts with it in 2017

“It is only part of the fundamental insincerity of the party,” he said. “At the moment, nothing is ingrained in the reality of what is revealed in their messages”

(In a separate interview with Yahoo over the weekend, he declined to comment on whether he would vote for undocumented immigrants to receive direct payments under the aid package)

Fetterman blamed some of the Republican senators for acquitting Trump as “co-conspirators” in his second Senate impeachment this week when the then-president instigated the deadly assault on the Capitol

“It was right up to the definition of incitement to say that Pennsylvania in particular was betrayed or fraudulent or did anything other than provide a real and fair sure result,” he said

Fetterman’s 2018 opponent, real estate developer Jeff Bartos, is one of several Republicans contemplating a Senate run.Others include former U.S. Rep. Ryan Costello of Chester County, Kenneth Braithwaite, who served as Secretary of the Navy for Trump, and former US. Attorney Bill McSwain

Costello sometimes criticizes Fetterman on Twitter “He’d be awful – errand boy for a bad governor,” Costello said in a tweet last month. “If I ran, I’d smoke Fetterman in the suburbs,” he said in another. p>

While Fetterman often brings a social media torch to many Republicans, he has become friends with Bartos and encouraged his 2018 rival to run

“There’s nothing negative about him that ever comes out of my mouth,” said Fetterman of a candidate he could face in 21 months. “It would be devastatingly warm if it ever worked out like that”
