A restaurant in Irving is looking to bring a lot of luck in 2021 by serving free black-eyed peas on New Years Day

“We got this idea, let’s all give away black-eyed peas for free. That way it has to help someone, right?” said restaurateur Mel LeMane

LeMane owns Po ‘Melvin’s on North Beltine Road and is still making the black-eyed pea recipe that got his father’ Best in Show ’30 years ago at the State Fair in Texas and bringing the family into the restaurant business / p>

“I think what makes them unique is the sauce that the black-eyed peas are actually cooked in, which is what makes them so good,” explained LeMane

Although the restaurant is suffering from the pandemic, LeMane will be giving away these famous black-eyed peas in a contactless drive on New Years Day from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. They serve four six-ounce servings per car until all the peas are gone >

“Hopefully this year we’ll change some luck and someone will be very successful, maybe by eating those black-eyed peas,” he chuckled

“I’ll eat until I pop I’ll eat as much as I can believe me I need all the luck I can get I’ll spoil myself too much I’ll be a glutton on New Years Day I can guarantee you that” he said

The restaurant also offers extra black-eyed peas, cabbage vegetables and jalapeño cornbread for sale on New Year’s Day
