Former Steelers linebacker and NFL Hall of Famer Kevin Greene has died aged 58

Greene was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the 1985 NFL Draft and played for the Rams, Steelers, Panthers and 49ers throughout his 15-year career. He was also a coach with the Green Bay Packers and New York Jets

Greene was a 5-time Pro Bowler and a member of the NFL’s All Decade Team in 1990. He was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2016

“The Entire Family of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Mourns Kevin Greene I considered him a personal friend and a true Hall of Famer in every way. He had the most incredible can-do attitude of anyone I have ever met He was a great player, but on top of that he was a great man Our thoughts and prayers go with Kevin’s wife Tara and all of her family We will keep his legacy alive forever to be an inspiration to future generations with the Hall of Fame flag is hoisted on half of the staff in Kevin’s memory ”

Greene finished his 15-year NFL career with 160 sacks, ranking third in league history behind Bruce Smith (200) and Reggie White (198) He also had 23 forced fiddling and five interceptions

Former Panthers general manager Bill Polian said Greene was an exceptionally dedicated person to his family, soccer player, and military profession There he acquired the rank of captain and completed training as a paratrooper in the air at Fort Benning

“He was a homemade technician and as good as anyone who has ever played the game in terms of technology,” said Polian, like Greene, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame. “And because he was too small, Grit played a tremendous role in his success ”

“I wasn’t the biggest (and) I wasn’t the fastest,” Greene once said, “But as long as you have a motor, you have a heart that will overcome all physical limitations”

“I figured out how to get through a rush,” Greene said. “I figured out how to put a guy, an offensive device three to four inches taller and 80 pounds heavier, in a position of failure, and that’s what I did ”

Dom Capers, who coached Greene in Pittsburgh and Carolina, said Greene “was so passionate about the game”

“He had an infectious personality,” said Capers. “He influenced everyone he was with. Everyone had a tremendous respect for him because he not only produced as a player, but because he was as good a player as he was even better person was ”

“So sad to hear the news of Kevin Greene dying,” said Steeler’s defense attorney Cam Heyward. “I’ve only had a few interactions with him, but when we talked he always spoke with great energy and passion”

“It is an honor to represent this legendary number for you and your family today I will make you proud. Prayers to Kevin Greene a Legend”
