Thanks to the incredible success of WandaVision, the bar for the Marvel Cinematic Universe Disney shows is officially in the stratosphere. Next up on Disney is The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, a show about Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes who make their best (or worst) contribution Captain America is alive

As with WandaVision, Marvel kept most of the details around this show super-secret, but here’s what you need to know about the Falcon, Winter Soldier, and the state of the MCU before you watch

If, hypothetically, you need an update on the Falcon and Winter Soldier, I’d offer this hypothetical answer:

The Falcon is the Avengers code name for Sam Wilson, a former Air Force aviator who used the EXO-7 Falcon wing strap to perform pararescue missions. He met and befriended Captain America after Cap off the ice had come, and now Sam is flying around on metal wings looking bad

The winter soldier is James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes, Captain America’s childhood best friend Cap thought he died in World War II, but surprise! He didn’t survive Bucky because Hydra captured him, expanded him with experiments, gave him a metal prosthesis, and brainwashed him to become the deadliest assassin of the 20th century He killed JFK, but he’s been cool since Black Panther’s Shuri deprogrammed him and given him a hassle-free job on a goat farm

Both Sam and Bucky were victims of Thanos’ snapshot, so they were busy dusting off during the five-year jump in time between Infinity War and Endgame.Bruce Banner’s snapshot brought them back in time to be shared with Captain America in the last Fight against Thanos to fight

Yes, he’s been brainwashed! A pointless tool in the hands of the enemy! It really wasn’t his fault

I’m going to pretend this question is, “What Marvel Movies Should I Watch To Get The Full Stories Of Sam and Bucky?” “There are five movies you need to watch in order to The Falcon and understand The Winter Soldier

The first is Captain America: The First Avenger. This is the backstory of Captain America and introduces the friendship of Cap and Bucky. It is also the one where Bucky “dies”

Next up is Captain America: The winter soldier Cap meets Sam in this film and quite obviously Bucky’s brainwashing under the pseudonym “The Winter Soldier”

Sam shows up a bit in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but it’s not that important to his character development. The next big plot point is Captain America: Civil War, which is about the length the cap takes, Bucky too to guard in his brainwashing

Next up are Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the two-part ending to the MCU’s Infinity Saga Sam and Bucky don’t appear that often in these two films, but Cap’s finale reappears as old man Steve The Falcon and The Winter Soldier builds right up

The falcon and the winter soldier play after Avengers: Endgame Whether it takes place at the same time as, after or after the events of WandaVision is currently not known

We know from the followers that Sam Wilson has the intact Vibranium Captain America shield that old man Steve gave him at the end of the endgame, and Bucky appears to have the shiny vibranium arm that T ‘ Challah gave him in Infinity War Now they’re Vibranium Bros and that’s very cute

That seemed to be the old man Steve’s intention to give Sam the shield, yes. When Sam expressed his disappointment that he “had to live in a world without Captain America,” Steve replied, “Oh that reminds you me “and said Sam, the shield is his now

As for why Sam is still calling himself the Hawk instead of taking on the Captain America name, this will likely be a key point in TFATWS Steve Roger’s legacy is a lot to live up to, and probably has to working out some feelings before he can take on the title of best friend

Kind of Probably Bucky nodded in agreement to Sam when Cap handed over the shield in Endgame, but that doesn’t make Bucky and Sam friends

Although Bucky and Sam love Cap down to the last detail, they never really got along.Cap met her at two very different times in his life, and when Bucky and Sam spent time together, their rivalry was in the stars (and stripes ) written Bucky thinks Sam is an asshole, Sam is Bucky, and now they’re co-stars on their own Disney streaming miniseries

Good question, we don’t know TFATWS trailers show that one of the villains in this series is Helmut Zemo who was also the secondary villain of Captain America: Civil War (the primary villain was the threat of government oversight) Since Sam and Bucky both fought Zemo throughout the story, his rise to power may be enough to bring them back together

In Captain America: Civil War, Helmut Zemo planned to tear the Avengers apart by activating Bucky’s Winter Soldier programming. He was captured at the end of the movie and we haven’t heard from him in a while, but that is clearly Zemo in the trailer for TFATWS He seems to have made some terrorist friends and has really been interested in purple balaclavas since we last saw him

Oooh, another avenger! Schick We don’t know why Rhodey is involved in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, but we’re very glad he’s here

Not only is Sharon the legendary niece of Peggy Carter, she’s also an intelligence agent who came in contact more than once for Captain America Now that Steve has traveled back in time to retrospectively marry Sharon’s aunt, she works Get together with Sam and Bucky to find out what Falcon-y, Winter Soldier-y Shenanigans they’re going to do

I know what you’re thinking: who the hell is this guy? He’s Georges Batroc, an Algerian mercenary who appeared in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, in that movie, Nick Fury hired Batroc to hijack a SHIELD ship for, honestly, some really complicated reasons Batroc fought Cap on the ship and got his butt He is apparently fine now that he is on this TV show

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will be released on Nov. Premiered at Disney on March 25th and runs for six episodes. If this series follows the pattern of previous Disney originals, new episodes should fall at midnight PT or 3 p.m. ET
