Demi Lovato said she still uses alcohol and marijuana in “moderation” and referred to herself as “California sober” more than two years after overdosing

Prior to her upcoming documentary, 28-year-old Lovato was frank about her relapse, overdose, and ongoing recovery process on “CBS Sunday Morning,” “Dancing with the Devil,” which debuted on SXSW last week, describing the events that were going on 2018 led to her near fatal heroin overdose

At the time, Lovato was found unconscious in her home and was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment. She suffered a heart attack, three strokes and temporarily woke up legally blind in the hospital

Lovato said Tracy Smith of CBS found complete abstinence difficult for her and she has used moderation ever since

“So you’re doing what they call moderation I guess right? So you drink, smoke some weed, is that fair to say?” Smith asked Lovato

“California sober” usually refers to people who give up alcohol and most drugs, but may indulge in marijuana, as described in the articles by The Cut and Vice

Although she currently uses moderation, Lovato continued that she didn’t want others to consider it a “one-size-fits-all” fix

“I really don’t feel comfortable explaining the parameters of my recovery to people because I don’t want anyone to look at my safety parameters and think this will work for them because it may not work,” said Lovato Schmied

“I’m careful to say that I don’t think this journey of moderation is one size fits all, just as I think the total abstinence method is not one size fits all Also suitable for everyone, “she added

Lovato had previously been sober for six years, which she detailed in the 2017 documentary “Simply Complicated” “

In her new documentary, Lovato said she mixed meth, molly, cocaine, marijuana, and oxycontin on the first night of her relapse in 2018.She also revealed that she was “miserable” before overdosing and certain aspects of her everyday life during this time not controlled

“I didn’t control anything of my life at that time”, Lovato said to “Sunday morning” “But yes, I also had to grow up and take control”And I’ve only been doing that in the last two years of my life That said, I am now in control of my finances, I am now in control of the food I eat, how often I exercise “

Smith stepped in and asked Lovato to clarify if she was in control of what food she was eating

“Obviously I was in control of what I put in my mouth,” Lovato said. “But there were times when phones were taken out – in fact, every time I was in a hotel room, my phone was taken out of the room taken out so I couldn’t order room service “

“Regardless of what other people have said or done, my actions have put me in the place in front of you today. Unfortunately, no one but me can answer for my overdose,” Lovato said

“Dancing with the Devil” will be released on 23 March premiered as part of a four-part documentary on YouTube
