West Virginia players pick up the Liberty Bowl trophy after winning on Jan. and 21 Thursday in Memphis, Tenn, who defeated the Army

As the waning hours of 2020 came to an end, the WVU finally found a way to overcome the mistakes that had plagued them all year – albeit behind a backup quarterback

Austin Kendall led two touchdown runs in the second half to relieve starter Jarret Doege 21 victory at the Liberty Bowl Thursday in Memphis, Tennessee

A 20-yard scoring connection from Kendall to TJ Simmons at 5:10 in the fourth quarter put the WVU in the lead, along with a missed 39-yard field goal by the Army and a final WVU defensive score enough to to send the climbers on their way West Virginia ended the 2020 season with a 6-4 record

“I thought this game reflected 2020 in many ways, so a fitting way to end the year,” WVU coach Neal Brown said, “It wasn’t a pretty thing, but it was grainy and I thought it really was important for our boys to cope in the right way”â ????

Doege threw an interception in the first half and committed the main sin when the climbers led 10-7 by the end of the second quarter by fumbling deep in the WVU area where the army rallied at the climber’s 7-yard line and Quarterback Tyhier Tyler let them run in from 6 yards two games later to bring the Black Knights to 14-10 at halftime

With that momentum, Army (9-3) took the first kick of the third quarter and marched 75 yards in 13 games, devouring eight minutes after Tyler brought it in from 2 yards for his third touchdown of the game, led Army 21-10

When West Virginia took over after the subsequent kick, it was Kendall who trotted out onto the field and he immediately set off a largely dormant WVU offense. The Mountaineers walked 80 yards in 10 games, with Mike Oâ € ™ Laughlin finishing a 3rd -Yard pass caught by Kendall for a touchdown A 2-point conversion attempt was not good and the Black Knightsâ ???? The lead was reduced to 21-16, with 3:23 left in the third quarter

From there, a WVU defense that stood tall all day with the exception of two long touchdown rides held the mountaineers afloat outside of the Army’s march at the start of the second half and another one in the first and second quarters , which spanned 74 yards in 14 games, the Army scored just 111 yards in eight trips that included just 86 yards after Tyler’s third and final touchdown jump to open the second half

With the catchable balls falling to the lawn and Leddie Brown and the WVU running game mostly stuffed, the Liberty Bowl had all the signs of a 2020 WVU loss until Kendall, a transfer from Oklahoma and starter of nine games in last season, a fairytale ending to his last chapter in a mountaineering uniform took place

WVU was assisted by a pass-to-interference call on a third-and-8 to start the ride, and then Kendall hit Sam James for 14 yards on a third-and-12 to get to Army 38 A couple of throws against Bryce Ford-Wheaton gave West Virginia a premiere at the 20, and Kendall floated a ball to a wide-open Simmons in the far corner of the end zone to take the WVU to the top and eventually get the bottom line >

“Jarret has played very, very well all year, but he didn’t see it well for some reason,” said Neal Brown Austin has practiced very well during bowl prep and for the past six weeks and we have confidence in him I thought he came in relieved and did a good job

“I think it’s a good story in the fact that for the last two months of the season I thought he was really good at dealing with adversity, had a good attitude, was fun to train and when”His number was called, the best was made of it”

As the WVU’s offensive battles raised their ugly heads again, the defense put on a performance much more in keeping with what they’d done before the climbers 42-6 loss to Iowa State on Dec. 5 West Virginia only allowed 239 yards against the Army-vaunted triple option and limited the Black Knights to 31 yards per rush

Early on, the WVU tandem of Darius and Dante Stills walled the center, forcing the army to attack the perimeter in the second quarter, the Black Knights had success there and even more so in the third year, but it was something that Neal Brown and his employees finally supported

Then there were West Virginia’s own absences. Lead tackler Tony Fields was eliminated from the game and Speer Tykee Smith, an All-American Associated Press from the third team, failed to play after suffering an accident that Brown called an “accident” had a???? Senior safety Sean Mahone was also injured at the start of the first half

That forced players like Dante Bonamico, usually just a special team ace, into play, and he had 10 tackles

Neal Brown faced an attack that was completely different from the norm in the Big 12 and a little understaffed, and said he took pride in the prep work the defensive coaches do and the adjustments they make on the fly had to

???? A ton of it was running, to be honest ???? said the WVU coach “We tried to play our basic defense, we didn’t try to recreate the wheel here in nine days”It just wasn’t possible

â ???? We basically practiced last Tuesday and Wednesday, came back and then had a traditional game week. We practiced seven times and only one of those was in shoulder pads I thought with that minimum our staff did a good jobâ ????

The Mountaineers averaged just 64 rushing yards per game in their four losses as they ran for 2106 yards per competition in the five previous wins on Thursday, the WVU had only 42 rushing yards, with everyone outside of Leddie Brown (Aug. Carry for 65 yards) together minus seven yards on seven carry completed

Kendall finished 8 of 17 for 121 yards and Doege was 15 for 25 for 159 yards with a touchdown and a pick, everything in the first half Simmons was also on the receiving end of Doege’s touchdown throw and led the climber in his last Play at 56 yards on four catches

Tyler ran 76 yards with 24 runs for Army without several key players being kept out of the game

The Black Knights were without five starters, including Will linebacker Jon Rhattigan, USA Today’s All-American Second Team Award. Starters Jeremiah Lowery and Daryan McDonald were also missing from the Black Knights’ defense when they were started running back Tyrell Robinson, defending Luke McCleery, Jordyn Law, Connor Bishop and Jakobi Buchanan from the third string don’t play
