This was arguably the biggest game in the Fran McCaffery era for the Iowa basketball program. The Hawkeyes are a top 5 preseason team and in many ways have the best single player of the season in Luka Garza and a seasoned sideline in In the first six wins of the season averages over 100 ppg, including wins against North Carolina and rival Iowa State

But their opponent on Saturday was a very different beast. It was No. 1 Gonzaga who has already scored wins against top 10 teams Kansas and West Virginia The Bulldogs looked like favorites to win the national championship and just getting started

But the No. 1 team had to take a “break” because of multiple positive results for Covid-19 disease. They haven’t had much practice since then and one of the pre-game storylines was whether rust was a factor in the Bulldogs start And since the Hawkeyes have a Juggernaut offense, this could possibly have been the way for them to win the game

Unfortunately that never happened for Iowa Gonzaga went for 10 made three points in the first half alone. The freshman phenomenon Jalen Suggs was fantastic overall, made seven long balls and hit a season high of 27 points to get the Bulldogs to a 99 -88 victory to lead

Luka Garza did everything he could in the 37 minutes he played, scoring 30 points and 10 rebounds in the 13/18 shootout from the field while inflicting a ton of fouls on Drew Timme and Joe Wieskamp who had 20 Points to give some help, but as a team, Iowa went 4-22 from the deep and 14-26 from the free throw line

It’s a disappointing result for Iowa Basketball to miss a potential No 1 leaderboard, but the team still has national title aspirations after the defeat. Here are some special lessons from the game for the Hawkeyes
