World Cancer Day is an international day of awareness when the world should think about cancer and take action against it
Under the leadership of the Union to Fight International Cancer (UICC), it is a global event that takes place every year on April 4th February takes place and is intended to draw attention to the disease
Figures released by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) to mark World Cancer Day showed that breast cancer was the most diagnosed cancer in the world in 2020 – it now accounts for 11 percent of all new cases, followed by lung cancer
Globally, one in five people will develop cancer at some point in their life, and one in eight men and one in eleven women will die of the disease This is evident from research by the IARC
Here’s what you can do about the story, this year’s theme and how to get involved
It all started in Paris, where six oncologists, determined not to forget the disease in the new millennium, drafted a charter setting out a vision for combating the effects of cancer on “human life, human suffering and the productivity of nations ”
This came to be known as the Paris Charter Against Cancer and was later adopted by then-French President Jacques Chirac and on Dec. February 2000 signed by the Director General of Unesco Kōichirō Matsuura
The charter has many objectives, including promoting research into prevention and finding a cure for the disease, as well as raising awareness and changing services for patients
In his last article, the idea of an international awareness day was presented: “In recognition of the declaration of all competent institutions that the 4th February is to be marked as ‘World Cancer Day’, the Charter of Paris is held in the hearts and minds of people around the world every year ”
The goal of the day was to create a positive moment around the disease that aims to encourage personal and collective action
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the event Times and the theme is “I am and I will” It focuses on people’s engagement, whether through an organization, a company, or to act as an individual
The event’s official website lists how to attend and help the cause by creating a social media post, organizing a fundraiser, writing an article in your newsletter, or contacting a journalist
There are also a number of online events around the world A full list can be found here
