Wales will be announced from midnight (19th December), and plans are canceled for everyone except Christmas Day

First Minister Mark Drakeford made the announcement after it was discovered that there were urgent talks with ministers about a new more infectious strain of coronavirus

As part of the new lockdown, all non-essential retail, contact, fitness and leisure centers as well as the hospitality industry will be closed at the end of today’s trading

A single-person household can join forces with another household during the entire fourth alert

On Christmas Day, two households are allowed to come together for a Christmas bubble, this is reduced from a period of five days

Mr Drakeford said the new strain of the virus is significantly more contagious and is spreading faster than the original

In a statement, the First Minister said: “The situation is incredibly serious. I cannot exaggerate

“We have therefore made the difficult decision to bring forward the Wales level four alert restrictions, in line with the measures taken in London and the south-east of England

“These new restrictions will take effect from midnight tonight instead of the Christmas season

“This means that non-essential retail stores, close contact services, gyms and recreation centers, and hospitality businesses will close at the end of today’s trade

“Today I met First Ministers of Scotland and Northern Ireland and Michael Gove from the UK Government to discuss the latest information on a new strain of coronavirus

“We now know that this new strain is far more contagious and spreading faster than the original one

“Many of you will have heard this afternoon the Prime Minister set out the pattern of transmission in London and the South East of England that has been linked to this new variant of the coronavirus

“This is remarkably consistent with the rapid acceleration in transmission in Wales and the high case rates we have seen over the past few weeks

“Throughout the public health emergency, we have had to respond quickly to the rapid changes that are so typical of the coronavirus

“Today was one of those days when new information required an immediate response

“This afternoon the Cabinet met to discuss this worrying new development in the pandemic and to hear the latest advice from our senior medical and scientific advisers, including the implications for our NHS

“Unfortunately, we also have to look again at the Christmas arrangements – we cannot put people at risk from this new, more virulent strain of coronavirus

“So we’re going to change the current rules that allow two households to create a Christmas bubble over a five-day period so that they only apply on Christmas Day

“During the entire alarm level 4, a single household can join another household

“While we all want to avoid further business disruption and Christmas plans, our overriding duty is to protect life here in Wales

“This new strain of the virus is another terrible surprise in this long-running pandemic

“We will continue to protect ourselves and our loved ones and together protect Wales
