Norwich City was saddened by the death of Tony Collins

Tony played for Norwich between 1953 and 1955, where he scored twice as full-back in 31 games for the first team. He also had an impressive record for the reserve side, where he scored 10 times in 76 games for the club

He has amassed 300+ Football League games for York City, Watford, Norwich City, Torquay United, Crystal Palace and Rochdale, but maybe it’s management that Tony is best remembered

When he was named Rochdale Manager in June 1960 and encouraged by his teammates to apply for the vacant position, he became the first black manager in the Football League. His career in management proved to be very successful he led Rochdale to ultimate glory of the League Cup on a shoestring in just his second season as boss. To date, it is the only major trophy final for the Dale and one of only two appearances by a fourth division team in the League Cup final

He ran Rochdale for 365 games, winning 132 of them and moving 84 in a management career that lasted until 1967 where he took up a position as Chief Scout for Don Revies Leeds United. After years of success on Elland Road, Tony Revie followed in the English setup and later worked as a scout for Manchester United, Queens Park Rangers, Newcastle United, Millwall and Derby County
