THORNTONS at Merry Hill is one of 61 stores expected to close nationwide as part of a reorganization by the popular chocolate chain

The company today announced plans to close all 61 stores and put 603 jobs at risk

Bosses say the chain has been badly hit by the pandemic as many of its stores were closed during the key periods around Christmas and Easter

Adam Goddard, Retail Director at Thorntons, said: “Changing the dynamics of High Street, shifting consumer behavior to online, the ongoing effects of Covid-19 and the numerous lockdown restrictions over the past year – especially during our key Easter and Easter trading periods – means Christmas that we acted in the most difficult of circumstances

“Unfortunately, like many others, the obstacles we face and will continue to face on Main Street are too severe and, despite our best efforts, we made the difficult decision to permanently close our retail store

“We understand that this will be an uncertain and worrying time for our colleagues and we will actively support them during this consultation phase”

However, the company’s online sales have increased and the retailer plans to invest in its grocery business as part of its business restructuring

Founded in Sheffield in 1911, the Italian food giant Ferrero bought it for £ 112 million in 2015

Thorntons said it had pumped £ 45 million into transformation operations, including reformatted shops and cafes, but the coronavirus pandemic threw its turnaround plan off course

Ferrero said it will continue to invest in the business and hopes to expand its international utilities business from its Alfreton facility

Thorntons is the youngest known retailer to lean off the main street that was hit amid the coronavirus pandemic
