Rovers has appointed a new fitness trainer, Chris Rush, to leave the club this month

Jack Dowling was named the first team athletic performance coach, coming from Everton, where he worked for eight years

Dowling will join Liam Mason, who leads first-team fitness coaching The appointment comes as Chris Rush, director of athletic performance at Rovers, is leaving the club this month

Rush announced in January that after a decade at the club he would be stepping down in March, saying his decision to leave the club was made for family reasons and ended his 15-year career in professional football

Dowling joined Everton in 2013 and worked his way through Goodison Park to his final role as leadership and conditioning coach for the club’s academy

After taking up his post this month, he will be among the first-team coach for Tuesday’s Reading game

He wrote on LinkedIn: “My football career began as a volunteer coach at the age of 16

“During my time at university, I got a place in the Everton Sport Science Internship, which led me to my role as a sports scientist and then as a senior strength and conditioning coach for the academy

“I’ve spent six seasons helping Academy players with the physical side of the game and on their way to the first team. I’m really excited to begin my new journey at Blackburn Rovers as the team’s first Athletic Performance Coach

“A big thank you to everyone at Everton for my experience so far. See you in the future”
