A man was arrested after a racist message was sent to West Bromwich Albion midfielder Romaine Sawyers
West Brom said the “hideous news” was posted to Sawyers on social media during her loss to Manchester City
A 49-year-old man from Kingswinford near Dudley was arrested on suspicion of racist abuse of the player, West Midlands Police said
On Friday, West Brom said the club would “provide the Romaine with the appropriate support they need at this time and continue their long-standing commitment to ridding football of racism”
On Monday the UK government held talks with current and former football players on how to fight discrimination and abuse
The government plans to introduce new online abuse laws this year, and the Premier League has launched its own online abuse reporting system
The 29-year-old Sawyers from Saint Kitts and Nevis played for West Brom between 2009 and 2013 and moved to the club from Brentford in 2019
He helped them win promotion from the 2019-20 championship – he played 42 league games – and has made 18 Premier League appearances this season
