“I urge residents and dog walkers to be extra careful with their daily exercises until the remaining oil has completely broken down”

An oil spill from a fishing boat was brought under control by experts from the Salcombe Harbor team

The South Hams Council team was picked up in the early hours of Nov. Called to Batson Fish Quay February and found a lot of red diesels in the water

They are putting their oil spill contingency plan into action, placing outriggers around the leaky boat to ensure the spill has been quickly contained and to prevent oil from spreading in sensitive estuary

The council says that while there was still an oily sheen over the water, there was little sign of pollution on the coast other than some diesel against the west bank of Snapes Point

It is expected to remain on the water and be destroyed by natural degradation, a council spokesman said

“The team is training for these unfortunate opportunities and this training paid off today

“In the meantime, I urge local residents and dog walkers to be extra careful with their daily exercises until the remaining oil is completely broken down”

The spokesman said the water conditions were preventing any remaining oil from being recovered and although this would collapse it could still pose a hazard

As a temporary precaution, dog walkers are advised to avoid the affected coast. Walkers should take special care to wash their hands before eating, and no wild shellfish should be collected from the shore

Nigel Mortimer, mouth officer of Outstanding Natural Beauty in South Devon, said, “Diesel is a complex cocktail of chemicals that are quite toxic to any aquatic environment, but unfortunately accidents happen and the port team has a contingency plan, equipment and Exercise on the spot and have done their best to minimize the effects of this spill ”
