A notorious paramilitary killer who killed three people in a gun and grenade attack after an IRA funeral was released from prison

Michael Stone’s release from Maghaberry Prison came after his victims’ families lost a legal challenge designed to prevent him from prematurely ending his sentence

The former Ulster Defense Association member served a 30-year prison sentence during the 1988 attack on Milltown Cemetery in West Belfast

He had also been found guilty of murdering a milkman, shooting a carpenter in the head, and shooting another man up to 16 times with a machine gun

Stone was freed under the Good Friday Agreement in 2000 but returned to prison six years later for attempting to kill then Sinn Fein leaders Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness in Stormont

In November, Northern Ireland’s Supreme Court – the Court of Appeal – examined whether he should stay in jail until 2024 at the earliest, or if his minimum tariff had expired in 2018, as it spanned the six years he was released under license

The court concluded that the time Stone lawfully spent on the license should be included in the relevant portion of his sentence

In their ruling, the judges said that holding Stone behind bars until 2024 “would constitute an encroachment on the prisoner’s physical freedom and could only come about under the clear authority of the law”

This overturned High Court ruling last year requiring him to sit in prison for another five and a half years before being considered for release
