Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata’s mother has died after battling serious illnesses

The Spanish publication La Nueva Espana reported on Monday that Marta Garcia passed away on Monday after several months of fighting illnesses

Mata was very close to his mother and previously described her as “undoubtedly a key figure in my life”

The 32-year-old was absent from United’s squad for a few weeks in late January and February Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said little on the subject other than “he’s been away for a while”

Mata discussed his close relationship with his mother in his 2019 autobiography, Juan Mata: Suddenly a Footballer, in which he opened her “ritual” phone call before the game

The Spanish world champion wrote: “During a game, my mother was always more concerned about my physical well-being than about the result

“That’s why I always call her now when I’m on the bus on the way to the stadium. Always

“It’s a ritual that we both enjoy and that is also an additional source of motivation for me” Be careful, enjoy, shoot and try not to get hurt “are always her words

“But despite what she gets quite nervous about during games, she still doesn’t miss a single one. She even went so far as to text me during a game

“She is fully aware of the fact that I obviously can’t see it, so I imagine she is doing it as a kind of release mechanism for her worries and sometimes frustration

“Whenever I knocked or looked slightly injured during a game, the first message on my phone is your” Are you okay? Tell me something if you can ”

Marta also spoke about her relationship with her son in 2018 and said: “Juan doesn’t like being alone and for this reason we try to be with him as much as possible

“He’s a very happy boy and every time I see him I send him back with a suitcase full of things”

United goalkeeper David de Gea sent his support to his teammate and compatriot by sharing a picture of him on Twitter with Mata and adding a heart emoji
