UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock said Sunday there was “a long way to go” before COVID-19 cases were low enough to lift the lockdown

Hancock said in an interview with Sky News: “We should all be concerned enough about this pandemic to be following the rules, and it is just so important that people do it”
He added that they “do not know how new variants from South Africa and Brazil” may “be less responsive to the vaccine”
“The new variant that I’m really worried about is the one that is out there and that hasn’t been discovered,” Hancock said
He later told the BBC in a later interview that the government had identified 77 cases of the South African variant in the UK
“That is why we have taken such strict border measures against movements from South Africa,” he told the BBC
