Arsenal and England legend Ian Wright has expressed disappointment after an Irish teenager was spared jail for racially abusing him on social media
Patrick O’Brien of Tralee, County Kerry, abused the BBC football expert in private messages on Instagram last May after losing a FIFA game on PlayStation
A statement issued by Wright on Wednesday evening read: “I saw today’s verdict and I am disappointed. This case was never about revenge, it was always about consequences for racist acts
“My forgiveness for this young man was for my very personal need and desire to move forward without fear”
He continued: “The supposed immaturity and naivety of our attackers is never a consolation So yes, I am disappointed. I am tired. We are all tired”
The 18-year-old plead guilty to Wright on Nov. May have molested and sent a phone message that was grossly offensive, obscene, and threatening in contrast to the non-fatal crimes against the 1997 Personal Act
At a trial Wednesday in Tralee District Court, Judge David Waters said he had “seen nothing to gain” from imposing a criminal conviction and gave O’Brien parole
He noted that O’Brien had shown genuine remorse for his actions and had voluntarily donated € 500 to the Irish Network Against Racism
The judge said the language used by O’Brien was reprehensible, but the unthinkable behavior of a “naive young man”
He added that O’Brien had written an apology to Wright which was accepted by the former soccer player who had forgiven his abuser
Judge Waters said he had received a “very positive” parole report on O’Brien saying he had fully cooperated, fully and openly admitted his guilt, had continuous contact with his probation officer and was very cooperative
Mann said O’Brien was a “very, very good boy” who had “great results” in school, adding that he was “still a young boy,” and asked that he be without Stain in his file
