Sally Phillips was named winner of the Great British Sewing Bee’s New Years Special in scenes that aired tonight

The 50-year-old Bridget Jones actress beat competition from The Vivienne, Lesley Joseph and Sabrina Grant in the two-part festive episode judged by Patrick Grant and Esme Young

In the finals, contestants were tasked with making a party skirt for kids before turning old clothes into recognizable pantomime characters in the Transformation Challenge

They then created a bespoke party dress that brought back memories of a particular New Year’s Eve

Host Joe Lycett revealed the champion and Sally, who was trying to make a mime horse, loved the news

“I’m definitely not the best sewer in the room, so by the way they got robbed”

In the meantime, Esme said, “They were fun, they were lively, they brought something special to the sewing room”

Earlier this month, Denise Van Outen was crowned winner of the show’s Christmas special, beating Dr Ranj Singh, Shirley Ballas from Strictly Come Dancing and comedian Sara Pascoe for the title
