Mick McCarthy’s Cardiff City welcomed the Rams to the Welsh capital in today’s championship fight
Cardiff City returned to the top 6 after an impressive performance and Leandro Bacuna’s 4-0 win over Derby County
After a lackluster trip to Middlesbrough, where they were knocked out of the play-off places, the Bluebirds recovered loudly, making 10 unbeaten games under Mick McCarthy
Bacuna scored one goal in each half and Kieffer Moore headed his 16th Goal home of the season as he continued his productive form in front of goal Will Vaulks nailed the shine with the final kick of the game as he pounded a stunning 30-yard home hit to score four
And in truth, Derby never had an answer. They were thoroughly and comprehensively beaten when City showed again why they couldn’t be discounted at this promotional race and got in shape during the high season of the season
Cardiff wanted to impose itself on visitors from the start, which resulted in a nervous start for the Rams
Wayne Rooney’s team loved to play from behind, but Kieffer Moore, Bacuna and Sheyi Ojo were all great from the front in their press
It forced Derby to make a number of mistakes and gave the Bluebirds a number of excellent early chances
Such misplacement allowed Cardiff to throw deep into the derby half, and Will Vaulks tossed one of his missiles into the penalty area. The Rams defenders couldn’t handle the threat and the ball subsequently fell to Kieffer Moore at the back post, but the striker shot his volley over the crossbar from just six meters away
But it was all encouraging for City, which was the only team likely to score a goal at the opening exchanges
After only a quarter of an hour the first big chance came Perry Ng let go of Ojo with a nice through ball and when he wanted to pull the trigger Matt Clarke slipped in and seemed to have blocked it with his arm Ojo was so involved in appeal that the chance begged
It fell back on Ng and he sent a nice cross to the back post, but Moore’s header was just wide
A Cardiff goal was always at stake, however, and they didn’t have to wait too long for Bacuna to give them the lead
Joe Bennett fed a nice pass through the canal behind the defense and Bacuna clung to the hit, drilling a low shot with his left foot from a narrow angle that whizzed under Kelle Roos
The left back spun at just half an hour and changed direction unchallenged on the center line before falling to the ground in a crumpled heap
There was a six minute break in the game while the medical staff took care of him, but it looked really bad and it was no surprise that he left the floor on a stretcher
It took a while for the game to get back to its rhythm, but just before the break it was Cardiff who came closer again
A throw-in was re-sent and Moore took a chance on the back post, only Roos denied it with a nice save It fell to striker Bacuna who shattered the follow-up but it hit the inside of Roos’ Leg to miraculously fling it past the post
By the time Cardiff trotted down the tunnel at half time, they should have put the game to bed by now, but if they lacked that reckless edge in the first half, they more than made up for it in the second
However, they set out to correct the wrong shortly after the break and scored their second goal just minutes after the restart
Vaulks sent a nice, inviting corner to the near post, and Moore licked his lips as he burst on it and hit his header home to double the lead
Ten minutes later they were back and it was the choice of lot
Marlon Pack was good at winning a header in Derby’s half and it fell to Sean Morrison, who sweetly put the ball in Ojo’s path, while the Liverpool borrower drove to the edge of the box before hitting the ball 20 yards met Bacuna in front of the goal and hammered his shot past Roos into the far corner with his left foot A emphatic conclusion
From then on it was all over, Derby couldn’t get out of its own half and City was widespread
They thought they had a fourth when Ojo tapped the easiest chance home from a corner, but he was marked offside when he ceremoniously drove away
It was so pleasant for the hosts that McCarthy even had the opportunity to get Kieffer Moore off the pitch within 15 minutes and thus give Rubin Colwill his second appearance as a senior
Jonny Williams trotted on into the final minutes to make his City debut on a near-perfect night for City – apart from Bennett’s injury, of course.
Just when we thought everything was done, Will Vaulks had the final say and drilled home from 30 yards to make sure Rooney suffered his worst defeat as Rams boss
Granted, it might just be for one night when Bournemouth and Barnsley are both hot for Cardiff’s cocks and will be playing on Wednesday night, but shooting back into those play-off spots is another timely shot in the arm for this one lively city side
The McCarthy factor still reverberates in the Welsh capital club and happily they look as strong as ever
Cardiff City XI: Phillips; Morrison, Flint, Nelson; Ng, Vaulks, Pack (Ralls 87), Bacuna, Bennett (Bagan 36); Ojo (Williams 87), Moore (Colwill 77)
Derby County XI: Roos; Wisdom (McDonald 69), Clarke, Mengi, Edmundson, Shinnie (Vogel 69); Buchanan, Baningime; Jozwiak (Watson 69), Sibley (Waghorn 69), Gregory
Top work by Colwill and Bagan to get the ball left throwing you deep into the derby half to the visitors
Little joy for Derby who wins a corner, but it’s all too little too late
Top guy from Sean Morrison there Shinnie had haunted the box, but the city skipper was vigilant
Ojo puts the ball in Bacuna’s path and hits it with his left foot from 20 meters into the farthest corner of the city there is a riot
Flint is doing well to earn a corner and Vaulks swings it into the near post where Moore hits her and hits the header home!
Nice piece by Kieffer Moore there Clings to Bacuna’s film and quietly puts Bagan aside, which sneaks inside to earn a corner
Baningame volleys from 20 yards and that’s the end of the half
Another long throw causes chaos and Moore’s first shot is saved before Roos somehow manages to push Bacuna’s follow-up far
A faulty back pass allows Sheyi Ojo to throw himself and he runs through the gate.He shifts it to the left and knocks it deep off the edge of the box, but Roos rummages
A bit lousy since we’ve been back on the road. Both sides have just gotten into it again
Oh, that doesn’t look good Bennett fell into a heap unchallenged in the middle of the park. Looks really bad
Vaulks drops Moore with a nice diagonal ball. The striker has excellent control and hits from 25 yards, but it’s a very good save in front of Roos
Moore puts the ball on Bennett’s left wing and the defender slides an inch-perfect ball down the canal and into Bacuna’s path. He hits it deep and hard from a tight angle and it’s under Kelle Roos and into the net
