YORK’s response to Arnold Schwarzenegger – former bodybuilder and York gym owner Brian House – has died of Covid

Brian, 82, of Dringhouses, who met future Hollywood action star Arnie while participating in tournaments in the 1960s, was still functioning and fit and healthy when he got sick, said his son Paul

Paul said he was “absolutely broken” and paid tribute to “the best father a boy / man could ever ask for”

He said, “I honestly thought he had at least 10 years left, so it was a shock how quickly this terrible disease took him”

He said anyone wishing to say goodbye to their father who couldn’t come to the chapel or crematorium due to Covid restrictions could do so around 12 noon Wednesday, Jan. February, 4pm in Fishergate, York

He said his father’s first gym, Brian House Health Studio, was located there, in the place where the Mecca bingo hall is now

“This is where my father and his family started our fitness journey in York,” he said

“We all have fantastic memories of this place and we know many of you too

“So it seems fitting, although the gym hasn’t been there for a long time, that we should go there on my father’s last trip”

He added: “When all of this madness is over we will organize a Thursday so everyone can celebrate my father’s life”

Paul also thanked everyone who had shown family love and support after Brian’s death, leaving behind his widow Grace and two children, himself and his sister Julie

The press reported in August 2018 that Brian, who also ran Atlanta Health and Fitness at Clifton Moor and Olympia in Layerthorpe, had turned 80 but had no plans to give up pumping iron anytime soon

He then said that he worked out three times a week and even showed up at the gym on his birthday before heading to town with a group of friends

He said he got into bodybuilding at age 14 and was encouraged by a former Army PT instructor

Brian later became a PT instructor for the Army himself and didn’t seriously give up competition until he was 60

He finished fourth in the Mr Universe tournament – the same year the great Arnie took the crown in his first major competition win – and Brian won both Mr Yorkshire and Mr Britain in his day

He said he didn’t face Arnie directly because they were in different classes, but the future movie star was a nice guy

“He couldn’t speak much English, but I served in the army in Germany, so I knew enough German to chat with him”

Brian told the press in 2018: “I only train for myself now and will probably do it until I die

“It’s no longer about bodybuilding, it’s about keeping fit and keeping your body in good shape
