Report and highlights from Sheffield Wednesday’s Sky Bet Championship clash between Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County in Hillsborough when Callum Paterson’s goal got the managerless Owls out of relegation zone for the first time this season

Sheffield Wednesday left the championship relegation zone for the first time this season with a 1-0 win over Derby at Hillsborough

Wayne Rooney’s Rams showed a dominant performance in the first half and could have seized a number of opportunities, particularly when Colin Kazim-Richard’s header hit the bar

It looked like the second half would follow a similar theme, but Wednesday saw a third win in three games – and the second in a row under caretaker Neil Thompson’s manager – when Callum Paterson arrived from close range ( 61)

The victory brings the owls over Derby and on the 20th Place, with Rooney’s team now in 21st place Nottingham Forest falls to the bottom three as a result, before heading to Preston on Saturday

It has been exactly a year since Rooney arrived at Derby and after beating Birmingham 4-0 last time there was undoubtedly ambition to mark the occasion with a valuable win

After about 15 minutes, the Rams showed their intentions Joe Wildsmith knocked off Louie Sibley’s long-range shot before Graeme Shinnie’s successor over the bar Adam Reach shot a shot in the stands with one of the rare openings on Wednesday

Derby should probably have taken the lead just before half an hour when Kazim-Richards stooped to meet Craig Forsyth’s inviting cross from the left flank and headed a header onto the bar with a beaten Wildsmith

An injury to Josh Windass forced caretaker Neil Thompson to introduce Elias Kachunga on Wednesday, and the former Huddersfield forward almost gave the hosts the lead against the game as he saw Barry Bannan’s free kick past the left post

Forsyth sent a low cross over the six-yard box that avoided several teammates shortly after the break, but shortly after the hour the hosts took the lead against the game when Paterson hit the ball over the line after Derby couldn’t clear Bannan’s free kick

Derby continued to attack with little reward and received no penalty in second-half stoppage time when Lee Buchanan’s shot appeared to hit Kadeem Harris’ hand and was only their second loss since Aug. November brought in

It was a collective effort by Sheffield Wednesday but he has settled in well in the center-back. Colin Kazim-Richards was not an easy night to deal with but he got up and handled it very well

Neil Thompson, Sheffield caretaker on Wednesday: “We didn’t go to the races in the first half and we were a bit lucky, let’s face it, it looked like the games caught up with a game or two but at halftime I had a little word and we were much better in the second half

“I have to say the guys gave everything they got, we dug it up, Pato achieved his goal and it was great, I’m delighted”

Derby interim manager Wayne Rooney: “We were in total control, had some very good chances, we didn’t take them and found the game almost too easy”I thought we were bored of doing the right things and that cost us

“If you are at the forefront creating opportunities, you have to take advantage of them I got a feeling we were drawn into a game that Sheffield Wednesday wanted. We have to learn from this we have to have fun doing the right things “

Both clubs will be on Saturday the 9th January, to participate in the third round of the FA Cup Derby travels to Lancashire to face Chorley of the National League North at 12 at 3 p.m. while Sheffield Wednesday at 3 p.m. at St James Park faces Exeter
