Match report when Scotland hit back from a goal to score a 1-1 draw in Israel; Dor Peretz’s strike put Israel in the lead; Ryan Fraser’s goal in the second half secured one point; Steve Clarke’s side starts with two draws They are in second place in Group F, four points behind leaders Denmark

Scotland fought back from a goal down to score a 1-1 draw in Israel, but Steve Clarke’s side lost more ground early in World Cup qualifiers

After Thursday’s 2-2 draw with Austria, Scotland hoped to get their campaign off the ground with a win, but those hopes were thrown back when Dor Peretz’s strong strike (44) gave the hosts the lead just before half brought -time

Just like against Austria, Clarke’s team showed a lot of character and after a better performance in the second half, Ryan Fraser’s goal (56) gave them some of the booty

After victories for Denmark and Austria, it wasn’t the result that both sides wanted. Scotland, which is third in the group with two points, already has four points ahead of group leader Denmark, who starts against the Faroe Islands on Wednesday. Israel is now in fifth place after reaching its first point of the campaign

The warning signs were for Scotland from the start as Eran Zahavi missed a good chance after the hosts landed to the left of Scotland and Manor Solomon fired a shot from Scotland on the rear foot after a ball over the top

Scott McTominay soon had a few chances but went wide after getting up well to hit Andy Robertson’s corner before shooting off target from a difficult angle

Scotland: Marshall (5), O’Donnell (6), Robertson (7), Hendry (5), Hanley (6), Tierney (7), McGinn (6), McTominay (6), McGregor (7)), Fraser (8), Adams (7)
Subs: Christie (7), McLean (n / a), Dykes (n / a), Armstrong (n / a)
Man of the Game: Ryan Fraser

The first 15 minutes were surprisingly open but Israel continued to create chances as Scotland pulled and scrambled to reach the park. Zahavi saw a shot blocked by Grant Hanley and both Solomon and Shon Weissman hit straight David Marshall after the hosts had two good chances on the right

Clarke would have been keen to reorganize his squad at halftime, but his team talk was thrown in the air a minute before the whistle.A diagonal ball from former Celtic defender Hatem Abd Elhamed put Scotland on their backfoot and Israel brought the ball quickly inside to Peretz The midfielder let fly from 25 yards and Marshall was only able to push the shot into the upper corner after he had got two hands to shoot

Clarke made significant changes during the break, bringing on Ryan Christie for defenseman Jack Hendry and switching to a 4-2-3-1 formation

Scotland came in and out of possession with more intent and Christie played his part in equalizing, finding Adams with a pass down the line The Southampton striker drove to the edge of the box and played it for Fraser, who looked up and in the corner shot

Adams soon caused further problems with his straight running, forcing a good save from Ofir Marciano, who soon stopped Kieran Tierney’s long distance efforts, Sun Menachem then headed to the hosts at the far post

Steve Clarke shook his front line with Che Adams giving a first start and Ryan Fraser stepped in to support Callum McGregor was also called back when Ryan Christie, Lyndon Dykes and Stuart Armstrong made way

McTominay tried to steer an attempt into the corner after Tierney’s cross, but an Israeli defender blocked

Christie missed a chance with his weaker foot and Robertson saw a shot that was widely deflected as Scotland squeezed in stoppage time

“I spoke before the game and said if we want to try to win the group we have to win the game. But given the performance and the way the game went, we have to say that we are happy with one point because Israel were certainly the better team in the first half

“We knew it was going to be difficult We’ve seen enough of Israel to know it was going to be difficult. You have good players. You are brave when they take the ball and when you give them the time and space Let the ball play well as a team

“We didn’t allow them to play in October and that was the blueprint for success, but we didn’t do that enough. Maybe you can take it off on the trip – it’s a long flight, people will say it is an excuse, but it takes its toll on you

“The way the game went you have to be happy with a point in terms of performance But of course you want to collect as many points as you can to keep the pressure on Denmark, which looks like they’re running away”

Steve Clarke, Scotland manager: “We’re disappointed. We didn’t start well. We were disappointed to have lost the goal before half-time, but the players showed good character

“It’s another point on the way to where we want to go. There was a time in the first half when it was too easy for the Israelis to get out. They gave us some problems

“We asked the players to show a bit of character and they gave the players so credit for that

“Two points from two games – let’s see what happens later in the group I can’t foresee the future

“Austria will play against Denmark on Wednesday, one of them will lose points. We play the Faroe Islands at home and have to collect points”

“It was much better in the second half. It took us a while to get started in the first half, but we dominated the second half

“We showed character at 1-0 it could have been much worse, and the gaffer brought us to a fight in the second half

“There’s still a lot to play to get a point. We have to win the game in the Faroe Islands”
