The Duluth Swedish Cultural Society usually has their annual Lucia Day celebration at this time of year.Like most things in 2020, the pandemic has changed that

Although there isn’t a large personal event, the cultural society in Duluth still finds ways to celebrate December, the Swedish Lucia Day or Luciadagen is celebrated all over the world

The day honors the legend of a Sicilian girl named Lucia who risked her life to bring food and light to the persecuted in the catacombs. Northland is no exception to this annual commemoration, but this year the Swedish Cultural Society of Duluth is celebrating it Lucia tag in a virtual format

Mia Kraker, this year’s Lucia, says the importance of Sankta Lucia is even more important in 2020

“I think this year with the COVID-19 pandemic and the other things our nation is dealing with, I think that Lucia’s message of light and hope is really special right now, and I think that it is particularly significant this year “

Although no in-person celebration is planned for 2020, the virtual event features a retelling of the legend, a glimpse of Lucia’s past – through 1948 – and some traditional Swedish recipes and songs, all of which can be found on the Cultural Society’s website
