The Circle Season 2 Premiere Recap: Lots of Catfish in the Sea (Grade It!)

Netflix’s The Circle, too hot to handle set return dates, rollouts lasting several weeks

Warning: This post contains spoilers for The Circle Season 2, Episodes 1 through 4 Don’t read any further if you don’t want to know!

Who would have thought The Circle could be as strategic and devious as Survivor?

In the first four episodes of season two (which debuted this Wednesday), we saw a much more breakneck gameplay style compared to Season One’s Love Festival, in particular one feud tore the group apart, with nasty accusations flying back and forth and the Players were forced to choose sides Let’s take a quick look at the highlights from Week 1 and then you have the opportunity to have your voice heard in our surveys

Episode 1 introduces us to the first eight players, including five real people – Savannah, Bryant, Terilisha, Chloe, and Courtney – and three catfish: “Emily,” played by Jack; “Trevor” played by his wife Deleesa; and River, played by the much older Lee, all get along pretty well from the start, and Chloe (a veteran of Netflix’s Too Hot to Handle) likes Trevor immediately Savannah and Terilisha referred to as “influencers” with the ability to choose who will be “blocked” (for a full recap of the season two premiere, click here)

The influencers also have a chance to save a gamer, and Episode 2 begins with Terilisha rescuing Emily and Savannah Trevor that leaves Chloe, Courtney, Bryant and River on the chopping block, and after a poetry slam in which those in danger of texting the influencers (gag), Savannah and Terilisha go to the hangout to decide who is leaving Both agree that Courtney and River should stay, so it’s up to Chloe or Bryant Savannah is ready To drop Chloe which makes Terilisha question her #GirlGang loyalties The two are clearly not on the same page, and the discussion gets borderline hostile before reaching a final decision

Savannah holds on to deliver the bad news to Terilisha: It’s Bryant He just takes a deep breath – like he always does – while Lee sobs on the news (It’s only the first elimination, buddy!) Bryant is now blocked but he can see another player on the way out and he chooses the river who of course is really Lee. But he doesn’t even seem to mind? (“We all play a character”) They hug it and Bryant says he’s already a winner anyway. Oh what a nice guy He didn’t stand a chance. The episode ends with a shocking revelation: a new player is coming tomorrow and it’s Lance Bass from * NSYNC?!?!? Chloe clearly doesn’t know who he is because she says, “Maybe Trevor has some competition” (no, he doesn’t, and he doesn’t exist at all)

In Episode 3 we learn it’s not really Lance: it’s his personal assistant Lisa who has worked with Lance for 14 years (so now half the players are catfish? Who can we trust in this crazy world?) But some other players don’t recognize Lance either, and others are turned off if he says he’d use the prize money to fund a new * NSYNC tour (Um, we don’t think tours work that way?) But the big story is the fallout of Bryant’s Elimination: Terilisha blames Savannah in a group chat while Savannah insists it was “a mutual decision.” Then Terilisha pulls Chloe and Emily aside for a “True Colors” conversation, telling them that Savannah wanted to get rid of one of them Woo, the claws are out!

It gets really ugly during a game of truth or dare: when Terilisha is asked who is the greatest player, she says Savannah, and when Savannah asks if she sees her as a threat, Terilisha fires back, “You have it definitely not done I don’t keep a promise ”(Oooh!) Then Savannah is asked who she least trusts in the game Hmmm we stay on a cliffhanger but episode 4 reveals her answer: “Terilisha” She adds, “She will say anything to get you to like her, but if she’s an influencer she won’t save you” ( Ouch!) Terilisha replies with “#Pathetic” and the two exchange sharp barbs while the others watch in horror and amazement. Courtney cheers his girl (“Savannah, collect this wig!”), While Jack, also known as “Emily” , notes, “Terilisha may be vegan, but tonight it’s beef for dinner”

The next day the battle lines are clearly drawn: Trevor tells Savannah that he got them back while Terilisha tries to reach Courtney, but they are only fooled by a warm conversation Savannah tries to talk to Chloe and Emily with a private chat ” Real Talk “on their side and bluntly tells them,” I DO NOT trust Terilisha. “Emily won’t take sides, which infuriates Chloe, but they both eventually tell Savannah that they will support her against Terilisha will be thrilled if you believe something I just said ”

Well, she was right: it’s time to reevaluate and Chloe and Emily are being labeled influencers, with Terilisha and Savannah now at the bottom, Chloe and Emily – who are already besties – are going through the contestants, and it depends on the two troublemakers … and they block Savannah (they are probably #TeamTerilisha after all) On the way out, Savannah is asked to visit the person she believes should win She picks Courtney, warns him about Terilisha and Emily, and tells him you have to be a sneaky slut to win But! In one final twist, because Savannah picked him, Courtney is told he now has access to “The Inner Circle” (??) and he is called into a spaceship-like room with a series of large monitors (His reaction is perfect: “What in the intergalactic flawlessness is that, honey?”) We’ll find out the answer to that question next week!

Which side are you on with the Savannah / Terilisha litter? Who is your pick to win so far? And what the hell is “the inner circle” ??? Vote on our polls and share your thoughts on Week 1 in a comment below
