There were few people in hard music who were as instantly recognizable and widely recognized as the late, great Lemmy Kilmister

The icon was born to Ian Fraser Kilmister on December 24, 1945 in Staffordshire, England when he was young he played in a few local bands before becoming a roadie for the Jimi Hendrix Experience in 1967

“He was magical, he just stole the show, and I wanted to play that kind of music,” Kilmister later told Louder Than War when he saw Hendrix play

Kilmister was bassist and singer for the band Hawkwind, but was later fired after being arrested on the Canadian border for drug possession

After losing his role in Hawkwind, the rocker founded Motorhead, where he remained the front man and the only consistent member until his death in 2015, when he died just days after he turned 70 Birthday of an aggressive form of cancer

But he pushed to the end Motorhead had toured pretty extensively in 2015, and guitarist Phil Campbell thought of his demeanor towards the end of “Lem basically played the way he wanted to, as long as he could”
