Ernie Hudson recently shared some thoughts on his Ghostbusters character Winston Zeddemore, offering a little background on the character and sharing his thoughts on how the character was treated in the first two films, then he says that Winston Zeddemore is a “full character” in Ghostbusters after all these years: Afterlife is

There is actually a backstory to Winston in the original Ghostbusters script. He’s a five year old US. Air Force Air Police Captain with an extensive and impressive résumé that was all eventually cut out and Hudson says it was frustrating for him to go from being a character who ran the Ghostbusters to being a hired hand who “just is there” ”

As a guest on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum Podcast, Hudson shares that his character in Ghostbusters: Afterlife has a more concrete story that comes from writer and director Jason Reitman:

“We don’t know anything about Winston. With Bill Murray, we see him in his little studio or Danny in his little lab, we get a feel for what’s outside of what we see. But with Winston he’s just there. He just dives In the beginning there was a backstory, just before we started shooting they wrote it out

“Basically, he didn’t come to page eight, but to page 68. Throughout the backstory where I walk in and we talk about who I am and I audition and explain what I’m doing, he just says:” If there’s a steady paycheck I’ll believe anything you say, “I think that’s a funny line, but you don’t get to know who this guy is. It’s a fun play, but unfortunately there isn’t a lot to play. As an actor, you have to bring all of that with you, and hopefully people will see “

Winston went on to discuss how the studio went out of their way to turn the Ghostbusters team into a crew of three in marketing for the film, but that didn’t stop fans from giving Winston a hug:

“I think the studio probably worked overtime to make sure the Ghostbusters were always seen as three people, so I think it’s the fans – and I really appreciate the fans who really took on the character – and eventually Winston was one of the best selling dolls they had and they were surprised I think that’s because the fans really loved the character “

When asked if there is a backstory or something else for Winston in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Hudson said, “Yeah! Yeah, thanks to Jason Reitman Winston is definitely a full character” Great!
