Margot Robbie promises that her elongated Barbie film (which she will produce and star in) won’t be what audiences expect

Margot Robbie promises her long-running Barbie film will be unlike anything audiences expect Robbie first caught Hollywood’s attention with her role in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, despite first appearing as Harley Quinn in the DCEU was cast, became a real household name now, Robbie is considered one of the biggest stars to work today He played Harley twice and made a third appearance on The Suicide Squad the next year. She also received widespread recognition for her roles in films such as I, Tonya, Bombshell, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

By the time Robbie joined Barbie as both a star and producer, the film itself was long in the makingBarbie started his first development at Sony in 2015 and over the years has experienced multiple paraphrases and stars. At some point, Amy Schumer should die Starring, and by the time she left the project Anne Hathaway was in talks Robbie finally signed in 2018 and in 2019 Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach signed to write, with Gerwig possibly directing since then there have been no major updates

Even so, work on Barbie continues in a new profile with THR and her LuckyChap production partners, Robbie offered some teasing about what fans can expect from Barbie, as before, they essentially can’t expect anything as this will be completely different than what the audience might have in mind Robbie said:

And we like the things that feel a bit to the left of center. Something like Barbie, where the IP, the name itself, people instantly have an idea: “Oh, Margot plays Barbie, I know what that is” but our goal is to say, “Whatever you think, we do”I’m going to give you something completely different – the one you didn’t know you wanted”

The simple addition of Gerwig and Baumbach certainly seemed to suggest that Barbie wasn’t going to be a typical story about the iconic doll, and Robbie’s comments further corroborate that belief on a Barbie-fronted project, it’s easy to believe it would could be a superficial, family-friendly story about kindness or other barbie-like values. However, since Gerwig and Baumbach write and Robbie produce, this project seems to dig deeper into Barbie’s world and characterization

It’s a little hard to imagine right now how that will take shape, but it sounds intriguing Robbie’s LuckyChap banner has so far worked on projects like Birds of Prey and Promising Young Woman, which come out this week – as do both these films others from the company – feature bold feminine-fronted stories, and it sounds like Barbie might be their latest. It remains to be seen when Barbie will be released as it hasn’t even started production (or has been officially appointed director) ) but it’s still in active development The COVID pandemic probably didn’t help, but Robbie and her team could make further progress next year Fans just have to keep their eyes open
