Ontario announced that Toronto and the Peel region will move into the gray area of the province’s COVID-19 reopening framework on Monday, lifting the stay at home order and allowing some businesses to open their doors for the first time since last November >
The Ford government announced Friday that the stay at home order expires at midnight on Sunday
The North Bay Parry Sound District, which is also where the home stay order is placed, will join the framework on the red level
In addition, the government said seven other public health regions will also move to other levels under the framework
Peterborough, Sudbury and Simcoe-Muskoka are moving to the red plain, while Haldimand-Norfolk and the Timiskaming Health Unit are moving to the orange zone
Health Secretary Christine Elliott said the government is taking a “safe and careful approach” to end the nationwide shutdown
“Despite this positive step forward, a return to the framework is not a return to normal,” she said in a statement
“As we continue to vaccinate more Ontarians, it is important for everyone to follow public health measures and stay home as much as possible to protect themselves, their loved ones and their communities”
In the gray area, personal shopping is permitted for retail stores with strict capacity restrictions.Important stores such as supermarkets and pharmacies have a capacity limit of 50 percent in this phase, while all other stores have a capacity limit of 25 percent
At this stage, 10 people are allowed to gather outdoors, but the distance of two meters must be respected. Masks are strongly recommended outdoors
Outdoor recreational facilities such as ice rinks, ski hills and snow trails may be opened with restrictions
The government extended the home stay order for Toronto, the Peel Region and North Bay two weeks ago due to the high COVID-19 case numbers
Restrictions in the rest of the province eased last month as regions reverted to the government’s color-coded pandemic response framework
Top physicians in Toronto and Peel this week recommended that their regions move to the Framework’s gray exclusion zone
The provincial chief medical officer says he is concerned about the positivity rates of the tests and more infectious variants in these regions, and the reopening needs to be careful
The reopening announcement comes on the same day that Ontario reported an increase in the number of new COVID-19 cases
This is the first time in three consecutive days that the province has more than 1Has added 000 new cases of the novel coronavirus
