Ontario Treasury Secretary Rod Phillips delivers the provincial budget at Queen’s Park in Toronto on November 5, 2020

Ontario Treasury Secretary Rod Phillips is currently on vacation outside the country, his office said Tuesday, as federal officials have urged Canadians to avoid unnecessary travel and Ontario remains closed

Mr Phillips said in a statement Tuesday morning that at the end of the legislature on December 8, he and his wife were embarking on a “pre-planned personal trip” outside Canada

“Would it have been the possible shutdown of the province on 26 Known December, we would have canceled the trip, “said Mr. Phillips wrote

“I continued my day-to-day work as Treasury Secretary and MPP for Ajax, including dozens of calls and meetings from the Digital Ministry, Constituency and Cabinet Committee”

Mr Phillips said he and his wife would adhere to public health guidelines, including quarantine for 14 days. His office would not tell where they are vacationing

The Globe and Mail asked his office if he was vacationing out of the country on Sunday. At the time, his office said it did not know where he was vacationing Emily Hogeveen, a spokeswoman for Mr. Phillips said Tuesday the minister and his wife left Dec 13

Mr. Phillips’ Twitter account continued to post tweets as if he were in Ontario on Tuesday, Dec. 15, a tweet from his account showed a photo of him and a group of colleagues making a funding announcement in Durham

On Dec. 18, another tweet from his account said he stopped by a company in Ajax this past weekend

Ms. Hogeveen said Mr. Phillips “hasn’t made any public appearances or trips since December 13 All the photos posted since then were photos our staff thought would be useful, along with the tweet, etc. To post ”

On Dec. A tweet from his report reads, “As we all make sacrifices this Christmas, remember that some of our fellow citizens won’t even be home for Christmas dinner via Zoom, thousands of heroes on the front lines will be at work and after us Keep an eye out Who is the special hero in your life who you want to thank? ”

Last week, Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford announced a statewide lockdown that began at 12:01 am on December 26 and will last until January 21 in southern Ontario in the north, the area north of the French River to which also heard of Sudbury but it will only take 14 days

The closure closed many businesses, banned indoor gatherings and indoor dining, and restricted grocery stores and pharmacies to 50 percent capacity

While lockdown measures are now in effect across the province, previous lockdown rules were in effect prohibiting indoor restaurants, hairdressing salons, and gyms from opening, and only allowing personal shopping at major and large stores in the Greater Toronto Area

Mr Ford’s office declined, regarding Mr. Phillips’ trip and the above questions should be directed to the Secretary of the Treasury

NDP Vice-Chair Sara Singh said Mr Ford “cannot give Treasury Secretary Rod Phillips a free pass to his decision to leave the country for a December vacation while ordering everyone else to stay at their home”

“Doug Ford let Sam Oosterhoff off the hook when he was holding a large family. Ford let go of the hook for meeting his family when he told the rest of us we can’t do these People just think that the rules don’t apply to them “Said Singh

Ms. Singh said that while the rest of Ontarians are in pain to hug our loved ones again, Doug Ford insiders are cheering and even vacationing in the tropics. ”

Meanwhile, the Canadian Health Department urged Canadians to stay home and warned of heavy fines if they are not quarantined on return from the trip

“The Canadian government continues to advise against unnecessary travel and reminds all travelers returning to Canada that violating mandatory quarantine could result in severe penalties,” the agency said in a press release released Tuesday

“Restrictions change quickly and can be imposed by countries with little warning Those who choose to travel may have to stay outside Canada longer than expected,” she continued

The agency said travel restrictions, in effect since March, are “working” with a 90 percent decrease in travel volume at airports and only 2 percent of all known COVID-19 cases that have come from travel outside the country

Public health officials are trying to review travelers’ quarantine plans, and although the majority are sticking to plans, the agency said it issued 185 verbal warnings, 20 written warnings, 130 tickets, and eight charges
