Ontario and Manitoba followed Northern Ontario’s lead by canceling their respective provincial curling championships on Monday

Ontario stated that last season’s winners would represent the province in the Calgary Bubble National Championships later this season. Team John Epping will play for Ontario at the Tim Hortons Brier and Team Rachel Homan will play at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts wearing the colors of Ontario

Teams compete in a bubble setting at the Markin MacPhail Center The dates are not yet set, but the Scotties are slated to start on Feb 19

“It will be another Scotties for sure, but we are very happy to be able to represent Ontario,” said Homan. “We are grateful that we can represent Ontario and hopefully make it proud”

Manitoba announced that its playdowns were canceled on Monday but did not immediately announce its team selections for Nationals Northern Ontario canceled its playdowns earlier this month

Team Brad Jacobs will return to the Brier and Team Krysta Burns accepted an invitation from the Northern Ontario Curling Association to compete in the Scotties after Team Krista McCarville declined

McCarville imposed travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, family and work commitments for the decision of Burns, who dropped a 6-5 decision against McCarville in the 2020 provincial final, was the next finalist

“I think we were all totally shocked,” Burns said of the opportunity. “We never really saw it as a possibility. When it came through we just said, ‘OK, let’s pinch us here'”

The national women’s championship is the first of six competitions to be held in one hub on the grounds of Canada Olympic Park. The Scotties are followed by the Brier, the Canadian mixed doubles championship, the men’s playdowns and two Grand Slams -Events

Burns finished third in the 2017 Canadian U21 Junior Championship, and that year she also won an underground sports title at Laurentian University

“Being there and representing where you are from means the whole opportunity so much more,” Burns told the Canadian press in Sudbury, Ont. “I know it will be something we will never forget”

Your team consists of Amanda Gates, Sara Guy and Megan Smith Gates have played three times for the Scotties, most recently in 2018 with the Tracy Fleury team

The 16-team fields at the Scotties and Tim Hortons Brier are mostly filled with winners from provincial and territorial playdowns, which traditionally take place in January and February. Many of these events remain on the calendar, but seem on the uncertain due to the pandemic Floor to stand
