INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Oral Roberts came up with another surprise, finishing only the second No. 15 seed in NCAA tournament history to advance to the round of 16 with an 81-78 win over Florida on Sunday night

Kevin Obanor and Max Abams carried the Golden Eagles out of an 11-point deficit to take out the Gators Oral Roberts, who won the tournament with a breathtaking surprise over No. 1 opened 2 seed Ohio State, will next try No. Tee off 3 seeds Arkansas next weekend

Obanor scored 28 points and Abmas, the regular season national top scorer, finished the game on 26 points as the Golden Eagles (18-10) finished the game on a 25-11 run to make the 11-point Leadership in Florida to be overcome with less than 10 minutes left

Oral Roberts joins the Florida Gulf Coast – these guys from Dunk City – as the only No. 15 seed to reach the last 16 in tournament history

The Oral Roberts fans at the Indiana Famers Coliseum sang “Cinderella” after the victory during a wild celebration

The chance to hit the sweet 16 was news that coach Paul Mills hammered home after beating the state of Ohio in the opening round, if they enjoyed beating the horse chestnuts a week would be in that they could go to the next round, even better

Oral Roberts took a 77-76 lead – the first lead since the end of the first half – on Obanor’s basket, less than 3 minutes to go. Noah Locke answered for the Gators but DeShang Weaver, who missed his first five shots , hit an open 3-pointer for an 80-78 lead with 2:08 remaining

Florida stood a chance but failed to get good shots of its recent possessions. The Gators had two turnovers, Locke missed a corner 3-pointer and after Obanor shared free throws, Tre Mann and T had tough 3-point attempts Scottie Lewis offline

Mann led the Gators (15-10) with 19 points, but remained calm late in the second half and didn’t score a goal in the last 17 minutes

Locke finished the race with 17 points and Colin Castleton and Tyree Appleby both added 14 for the Gators But there will be a lot of anger and frustration after losing and one in the second round for the third straight time in the NCAA Game that betrayed Florida

The Gators shot 55 percent. They beat the smaller golden eagles 37-24 and had 42 points in the color. But Florida made 20 turnovers and only had three baskets made in the last 9½ minutes

In the eight previous cases of a No. 15 seed played in the round of 16, only the Florida Gulf Coast was able to continue its magical run. “Dunk City” ousted the state of San Diego in the second round before losing to Florida in the Sweet 16

Most of the time, the exhilaration of overcoming the first-round surprise resulted in a second-round loss. Only Coppin State lost less than 10 points in 1997, an 82-81 loss to Texas

One of the game’s biggest decisions came 3-11 after Oral Roberts drew within 76-75. The Golden Eagles fouled Florida’s Osayi Osifo, a 50% free throw shooter of the season, as soon as the ball got into their hands Osifo missed the front end of a one-on-one and Obanor scored to give the Golden Eagles the lead

Florida had Appleby back on the ground after a cut to the head against Virginia Tech that knocked him out of the game The Gators also had Omar Payne return after being held up by a coach’s decision to open the game Payne was excluded from the quarterfinals of the SEC tournament early in the second half for an apparent 2 foul against John Fulkerson of Tennessee. Fulkerson suffered a concussion and a broken face and did not play in Tennessee’s loss to the State of Oregon
The Golden Eagles faced Arkansas earlier this season and lost to the Razorbacks 87-76 20 on December
