The new strain of COVID-19 first identified in the UK was found in two residents of the Durham area

Health officials say the couple have no travel history and are not known to have been exposed to high risk contacts and are in self-isolation

Dr Barbara Yaffe, Ontario’s deputy chief health officer, confirmed the diagnosis on Saturday, saying it was the first two cases of the variant found in the province and in the country

“This reinforces the need for Ontarians to stay at home as much as possible and continue to follow all public health advice, including the statewide shutdown beginning today,” said Yaffe. “The Durham Area Health Department has case and contact investigations and Ontario is working with our federal counterparts at the Canadian Public Health Agency “

The variant has also been confirmed in Denmark, Belgium, Australia and the Netherlands The discovery earlier this month led to increased travel restrictions to and from U.K

Modeling and epidemiological studies suggest that the COVID-19 variant, first identified in the UK, can spread easier and faster, Yaffe’s office reported There is no evidence that it is more likely to cause serious illness, and there is no evidence that vaccines are less effective against it
Peterborough Public Health doesn’t update its COVID-19 test results on Boxing Day, there have been 28 active cases in the region as of Thursday, out of a total of 290 since March
