MIAMI – As Naomi Osaka’s winning streak came to an end in Wednesday’s 23 games, she paused before craning her neck and studying the sky as if to intervene from above

Then she went on, and no. 23-year-old Maria Sakkari, who upset Osaka 6-0, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open

“The more things like this happen, the more I will learn from them,” the No. 2 rank Osaka said

Osaka’s loss was her first since February 2020 and ended any chance of the No. 1 to regain 1 rank this week from Ash Barty, who is in the semi-finals

The men’s favorite left almost 12 hours later when Nr Daniil Medvedev lost with one seed to Nr 7 seed Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain, 6-4, 6-2 Medvedev mutilated his racket in anger after he served had lost, only to fall behind late in the first movement, and for the rest of the way little went right for him

“If he broke a racket, he lost patience,” said Bautista Agut. “I think I did some great things to put pressure on him and make me feel this way”

Medvedev fell 3-0 against Bautista Agut, one of the six players left in the men’s draw. None of them won a Masters 1000 event

Sakkari will be No. next. The 8-seeded Bianca Andreescu from Canada, who dropped the service eight times but overtook the unset Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-4, 3-6, 6-3

“I’m very proud of the way I dealt with it tonight because it wasn’t easy,” Andreescu said. “My body gave way, and then my mind gave way at some point just thinking about how tired I was was ”

Osaka won her fourth Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in February, but she never crossed the quarterfinals in five appearances in Miami. She said she was uncomfortable on the hard court at the tournament

“I felt like I didn’t play well the whole tournament, like I couldn’t find a groove,” she said

Against Sakkari, the only Greek woman in the top 250, Osaka lost 15 consecutive points on her serve to create a 4-1 lead in the second set. In seven of her eight service games, she faced a breakpoint

“Today’s service problems came out of nowhere,” said Osaka. “My first serve didn’t go in at all today”

Sakkari has her sixth career win against a top 5 opponent. She is still in the tournament just because she saved six match points in the preliminary round before beating American Jessica Pegula

In the men’s category, the 19-year-old Italian Jannik Sinner earned his first place in the semifinals at an ATP Tour event at the highest level by taking the No. 1 defeated 32-seed Alexander Bublik 7-6 (5), 6-4

“You are not a person, man,” joked Bublik, “You are 15 years old and you play like that? Well done ”

Osaka only made 41% of their first serves and paid a price as Sakkari aggressively attacked the second set. Sakkari also served well, extending rallies repeatedly until Osaka made a mistake

“I don’t think it was the best tennis I’ve played in my life,” said Sakkari. “I just did what I had to do”

Osaka took a 40-0 lead in the opening game, but only won another point on her serve in the second set. When she ended the drought, she received a big ovation from the small crowd that was chasing her with her best tennis segment

But Sakkari rallied 40-0 down, won five points in a row and made one last thundering return to take a 5-4 lead, then served the win coolly
