A nurse at a Mississauga nursing home is the first person to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in the Peel region

“This milestone marks a welcome and positive turning point for long-term care and I am proud that I have rolled up my sleeves not just for my health, but also for our residents, family and friends,” said Bella Rego, a registered nurse at the nursing home the Camilla Care Community

Rego said she saw the devastating toll COVID-19 imposed on residents and colleagues during the first wave.She also tested positive for the virus in April and was isolated at home for a month before going back to work has been released

“Given what we’ve been through, the heartbreaking things we’ve been through, this was the most important thing to me,” said Rego

Rego was vaccinated on Monday at Trillium Health Partners in Mississauga, one of the first hospitals in the province to distribute the vaccine

“Now that we are in a second wave of rising numbers, we know that much remains to be done, but today there is much-needed hope for better days,” said Dr Dante Morra, Chief of Staff at Trillium Health Partners

Trillium Health is one of 17 hospitals the province announced on Friday that will receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine over the next two weeks

“It is truly an honor for Trillium to be a designated hospital for the delivery of the COVID-19 vaccine in this community,” said Michelle DiEmanuele, president and CEO of the hospital

“This vaccine represents not only a positive change as the pandemic progresses, but also what can be achieved when partners from all health systems, levels of government and communities come together”

The first 6000 doses of the vaccine the province received were sent to the University Health Network in Toronto and Ottawa Hospital last week, according to the Department of Health, more than 3400 frontline health workers vaccinated

After Rego received the vaccine, she was greeted with applause as she left the hospital to return to work

“It just gives me more hope and confidence to work with them again,” she said. “I think I’m covered and that gives me a lot of security”
