Zach Hyman sends a backhand shot to the back of the net as the Maple Leafs take out the Oilers 3-0

EDMONTON, Alberta – – Michael Hutchinson stopped 31 shots for his sixth career shutout, and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-0 on Monday night

Morgan Rielly and William Nylander each had a goal and assist, and Zach Hyman also scored for Toronto The Maple Leafs have hidden Edmonton for the second straight year after beating 4-0 on Saturday

Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe credited his entire squad with being reinforced without Star Center Auston Matthews and starting goalkeeper Frederik Andersen, both with injuries

“That was really healthy for us,” Keefe said. “Obviously we want to bring our people back here, obviously we’re a stronger group when we’re healthy. But it’s a very good sign that you can still win, especially here on the road against a very good team ”

Mikko Koskinen started in goal for the Oilers, allowing three goals on 10 shots before being replaced by Mike Smith to start the second half. Smith had 13 saves in relief

“We’re in a little rut,” said Edmonton trainer Dave Tippett. “The teams are having a bit of trouble, it seems like nothing you shoot goes into the net you know, point shots, distractions, you can get into that Usually find one or two of these in a few games. But they don’t go in for us right now ”

The teams will meet again in Edmonton on Wednesday evening to end a three-game series

When the Leafs broke down, Hutchinson was there to save them

“It just felt like one of those nights, the way he moved around the net and the parades he made It gave me confidence at least on the bench that they had to do a lot to score a goal tonight, “said Keefe.” He was great. It was fun to watch him out there “

Hutchinson was on the bench on Saturday when Jack Campbell led the Leafs to a 4-0 win

“It was a lot of fun to see (Campbell) get the shutout in the last game and get an injury,” said Hutchinson. “And for myself I thought the guys were doing the whole thing tonight Fought great the night before me and made my job as easy as possible ”

Toronto’s first shot of the night didn’t get into the first round until 7:19 a.m. but it was worth the wait when Rielly Hyman’s band passed and the striker sent a nifty backhand shot past Koskinen to give the Leafs a 1 : 0 leadership

Three minutes later, Nylander grabbed the puck from a faceoff and stormed deep into the Edmonton Zone, sailing a backhandler over Koskinen’s glove and into the top left corner of the net

A power play hit rounded off the goal in the first half after Edmonton’s Adam Larsson was asked to hook Rielly shot from near the blue line and while Koskinen got a piece of it he couldn’t control the puck and it trickled down his legs and over the goal line, giving Toronto a 3-0 lead in the first break

The Oilers had ample opportunity to score in the third half by shooting the Leafs 13-8 over the frame, but failed to beat Hutchinson. The 31-year-old goalkeeper’s final shutout took place on Jan. Instead of January 4, 2020, when he led Toronto to a 3-0 win over the New York Islanders

“We couldn’t find a way to crack them and get rolling and regain that confidence for this first one,” he said. “But I mean we have to stay confident that we’ve been rolling before, it’s a little flaw on that Radar It happens ”

Hutchinson had to stop a fast Connor McDavid in the third to keep his shutout in time

“You don’t have a lot of time to really think about when (McDavid’s) is coming down,” Hutchinson said. “You just see that he has the chance to get a chance and from there it’s all about react and hope that you will be able to save ”
