Province hires independent expert to investigate COVID-19 outbreaks in two Winnipeg nursing homes

The conference was in response to paramedics treating 12 residents of Maples Personal Care Home on Friday evening, three who were rushed to hospital and two who died

“Manitobans need answers,” said Friesen “There are questions that arise in this kind of situation, and these questions need to be answered”

Friesen said the independent expert would assess the condition of Parkview Place and Maples nursing homes leading to outbreaks The expert will then return to the province with advice on preventing situations like what happened in Maples on Friday evening.

“Despite the preparations, here we have seen the deadly consequences of COVID-19 in nursing homes,” said Friesen “Keeping COVID-19 out of our care homes has been one of our biggest challenges and l one of the biggest goals of our system leaders during this pandemic”

Lanette Siragusa, chief nurse at Shared Health, said the team consists of a 24-hour ambulance made up of two advanced care paramedics, a respiratory therapist and a supervisor

“Operators of personal care homes need to staff their facilities to meet the increased needs of residents during COVID-19,” Siragusa said “Given how quickly this situation has evolved, this requires additional support for emergency staffing plans to ensure appropriate care”

Citing that Maples Personal Care Home was properly staffed when Friday’s situation arose, Siragusa said there was a need for back-ups

“It was not normal”, said Siragusa “It was sharper, and more reinforcements were needed”
