Officials from the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) are investigating whether a fatal outbreak has occurred in a Barrie nursing home as a result of a trip outside Canada

In a virtual media conference on Wednesday night, it was revealed that a Roberta Place employee was in contact with someone who had traveled outside of Canada and later contracted COVID-19, it is not yet known whether this led to the outbreak, in which so far 122 residents became ill and 19 died

“We don’t know exactly and normally we will never find out exactly,” said SMDHU health officer Dr Charles Gardner “There was contact between a staff member and a person who had traveled out of the country but not to the UK, South Africa or Brazil. So we are not clear whether that person was the source or not. But this is certainly an important consideration as Possibility ”

Dr Gardner claimed he couldn’t go into any further details “I always limit myself to how much information I can give because we need to protect people’s identities”

During a media conference on Thursday morning, the deputy health officer, Dr Colin Lee suggested that the virus behind the outbreak is likely a variant of the original, it suggests it is a cause “Chances are there was a travel connection as the variant strain is relatively early in Ontario” he told media representatives “Nevertheless, we have now seen various exposure cases of people who are unrelated to travel, and it may have been the second generation of a previous traveler some time ago”

Tests on six swabs from Roberta Place show strong evidence that the virus infecting the long-term care facility is one of three known variants.A second, more conclusive test will be run and results are expected within a few days
