Premier Jason Kenney announced Thursday that Alberta’s COVID-19 restrictions would be extended through at least January 21

He also said that students who have chosen to study in person will return to the classroom on Monday

Kenney reported 968 COVID-19 cases with a 64 percent positivity rate, 871 hospitalizations with 139 people in intensive care, and 24 deaths

Citing high hospital stays and positive rates, the prime minister said the current restrictions – which do not include gatherings or personal service in restaurants and bars – will remain in place for two more weeks

“We need to see what impact the holidays had on the tests and of course we also need to prioritize the reopening of schools and begin to see what impact this can have, although we are confident it will not accelerate widespread social development Transmission This has not been the case in the past

The COVID-19 numbers have been falling since Kenney and Dr Deena Hinshaw put restrictions in place in November and December to contain the spread, but both said they are still very high

“We still haven’t seen the effects of recent holidays,” Hinshaw said, “and we will be closely monitoring the spread over the coming weeks to see if it is safe to recommend loosening our current approach””

Middle and high school students have been studying online since late November, and all students stayed at home this week

Hinshaw again argued that face-to-face learning was relatively safe after data showed that only six percent of school cases were transmitted in the classroom

Kenney said he spoke with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other prime ministers about the vaccine launch Thursday afternoon, details he would share in a news conference on Friday
