TAIPEI, TAIWAN –
China on Wednesday announced a plan to provide 10 million coronavirus vaccine doses to developing countries as part of its global diplomatic and business effort to distribute Chinese vaccines around the world under the global COVAX initiative

Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said China was responding to a World Health Organization request as developing countries try to address bottlenecks expected to end in March, not giving details of what vaccine China provided COVAX or whether it was COVAX a donation acted

China has already shipped a large number of doses of its own vaccines mainly to developing countries, and has made deals or donations with more than 30 nations, well in excess of the 10 million doses it makes available to COVAX in Turkey alone, the Chinese company has Sinovac Biotech Ltd hit a deal to sell 50 million cans

Its global effort is seen by many as an attempt to bolster China’s reputation as it seeks to repair its image after the first cases of the coronavirus were discovered in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019 at the start of the pandemic, China donated as part of a diplomatic push Face masks and protective gear to countries around the world It has labeled the virus as a mutual challenge to humanity, even suggesting that it may have been brought from outside the country

It was agreed to join COVAX, which was coordinated by the World Health Organization and GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, last October, specifically as the US. under then President Donald Trump had refused to join

COVAX wants to ensure that low- and middle-income countries have enough vaccines, as the rich nations have received a large chunk of the billions of pending doses from predominantly Western vaccine manufacturers

“We hope that countries in the international community with this capability will take action, support COVAX through practical measures, support the work of the World Health Organization, support developing countries with the timely procurement of vaccines and help to overcome the pandemic early”, said Wang in a daily meeting

So far, COVAX has only received a fraction of the 2 billion doses it planned to buy in 2021. Pfizer committed last month to deliver up to 40 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine via COVAX this year, the facility also has 150 million doses of the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University

Two Chinese companies, state-owned Sinopharm and Sinovac, have done a large part of the effort to get Chinese vaccines overseas, largely outside of the COVAX framework. The vaccines of both companies are inactivated and based on traditional technology to breed and Killing a living virus The virus is then purified before it is given as an injection

The inactivated vaccines appear to be less effective than more modern mRNA vaccines, but are easier to transport than Pfizer’s mRNA vaccine, which requires ultra-cold storage, a challenge for many lower-income countries

Only one of the vaccines made by Sinopharm has been approved for general use in China, but both have received either emergency or broader approvals in other countries and are actively used in mass vaccination campaigns from the United Arab Emirates to Indonesia

The vaccines have been criticized for a lack of transparency in data from the final stages of clinical trials, Sinopharm said its vaccine was 793% effective, in particular the Sinovac shot raised concerns after it was originally announced a 78% effectiveness rate in protecting against symptomatic disease However, after counting mild cases, it became known that the effectiveness is just over 50% due to his study in Brazil
