TORONTO – The Toronto Maple Leafs’ forward depth was hit again on Monday when they lost to Travis Boyd in a Vancouver Canucks waiver

Boyd is the second player in the past week without the Leafs slipping through the waiver wire after Jimmy Vesey on Jan. March had claimed from Vancouver

Toronto would have preferred to hold on to both Boyd and Vesey but are aiming to hold onto before the trading deadline on Jan. April had greater flexibility in rosters If one of the players had approved the exemptions, they could have been assigned to the taxi squad every day they weren’t playing, allowing the Leafs to maximize their available space by the deadline

This was deemed more valuable than the risk of putting two off-season free agent signings on the waiver wire, especially given that Alex Galchenyuk’s aspiring and waiver exempt players like Nick Robertson and Alexander Barabanov are already waiting in the wings

Also, General Manager Kyle Dubas is in the middle of the line-up in the trading market for a striker and said last week, “Over the summer we had to pull out some strikers that were good for us to move on to the back end and so we have this Feeling that this is an area we might want to look at a little more ”

Boyd has a contract for at least 700 as of October$ 000 signed 10 – the second day of the agency – after spending his first five professional seasons with the Washington Capitals organization
He’s been a mediator for much of his career but has managed to offend at reasonable pace with limited NHL opportunities that continued with the Leafs as Boyd scored three goals and eight points in 20 games and averaged scored only 9:40 a night

“To me, I thought I should or could be an everyday NHL player for a few years and that opportunity just didn’t come up in Washington,” Boyd said in February. “When I got here, it was my attitude to deserve this place but I know I have experience at this level Obviously I’ve played a decent number of NHL games

“Just to believe in myself a little more and go out there and know that I can be an ordinary gamer”

Meanwhile, Toronto is just the next man while Dubas continues with an additional 125 cap space available$ 000 working on the phones
