If America won, Canada would face Russia on Monday, but the Canadians would pull the Slovaks if they interfered with the U.
Russia reached the semi-finals with a 2-1 quarter-final win over Germany, while Finland beat Sweden 3-2 to move forward
Canada were the only team that remained unbeaten 4-0 in the preliminary round and led Pool A. The Czech Republic (2-2) finished fourth in Pool B.
Nick Malik, who was part of last season with the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds, stopped 22 shots in defeat
The host country did not dominate puck possession like they did in a 4-1 win against Finland to end the round robin
The Czechs fought hard for the puck to get Canada to chase them and often clogged the neutral zone to force Canadians to jump and hunt
But Canada’s streaky third-period pre-exam has reduced the Czech Republic’s chances of making a comeback
Czech coach Karel Mlejnek pulled Malik for an additional attacker with five and a half minutes of play, but McMichael scored an empty goal at 5:11 pm
The Czech failed to score a power play goal in less than two minutes when Quinton Byfield was punished for hooking
With a hard working backcheck, Canadian striker Peyton Krebs blocked an unusual Czech opportunity for sales towards the end of the reporting period
Levi was playing his busiest phase of the tournament, stopping all 12 shots he faced in the first
With eight attempts against Malik in the opening frame, Canada was outbid for the first time in a period
But seconds after Adam Raska’s interference penalty expired, Byram scored his first goal of the tournament, squeezing a shot under Malik’s right armpit at 11:39 am
Connor McMichael turned the puck on a runaway to Cozens The View of Buffalo Sabers shoveled the puck between Malik’s pads at 8:22 am
Connor Zary centered a line with wingers Krebs and Cole Perfetti in Newhook’s absence, and defender Jordan Spence also moved into the line-up
With 22 combined points from the 2020 and 2021 world junior tournaments, Cozens is in sixth place ever for Canada, ahead of John Tavares (20) and behind Jason Allison (24)
