If you ventured out on Twitter on the first weekend of 2021, you probably wondered why everyone was talking about beans

The answer: “Bean Dad” became Twitter’s first “main character” of the year, the person with such a bad attitude that people feel compelled to get involved

On Saturday night, musician and podcaster John Roderick told a story about his hungry 9-year-old daughter who wanted baked beans 23 tweets later we got the full story

So yesterday my daughter (9) was hungry and I was doing a puzzle, so I said over my shoulder: Make some baked beans ???? She said, “How?” Like all children, when they want YOU to do it, I said, “Open a can and put it in a pot ???? She brought me the can and said, “How do you open it?”

So I said, “How do you think this works?” She studied it and placed it on the side of the can. She struggled for a while and said with a big, dramatic sigh, “Would you just open the can, please?” Apocalypse Dad was overjoyed: A teaching moment just fell into my lap!

Basically the child wanted to eat the baked beans. Roderick saw this as a “teaching moment” ???? He wanted her to open the can herself. His daughter didn’t understand how a can opener worked because she is 9 years old.Roderick wanted her to find out how the can opener itself worked. Six hours later, the frustrated 9 year old found out how to Open the bean can with the can opener

The story and the tone in which it was told enraged Twitter â € œShe is 9â € ???? “Apocalypse Dad” and an Angry All-Caps “Six Hours”? trending on Twitter all Sunday morning

All I hear is, “At that time I told my father that I was hungry and that he would not let me eat for another six hours for no good reason”How did you ever go through this as a kid? You starve too long and just feel sick and want to pass out? No? Then don’t do it to the kid

You’re an asshole, dude, from one father to another, this story is nothing to be proud of, you taught your daughter how little you care about her needs and just that you have to show how much smarter you are than they FEED THEM, THEN TEACH THEN, then delete your account

My daughter called me yesterday and told me that she had been taken by kidnappers. She asked if I could use my special skills that I had acquired in a very long career to get me back “Aha!” I thought “A teachable moment!” (1/278)

One day, Bean Dad will need your help with technology or end-of-life care, and she will get revenge

The main feature of the discourse? feels compelled to weigh, even though you know you don’t have to and somehow don’t want to. That means, damn it bean daddy

The best part about these parenting trolls being concerned is that they keep thinking about what child abuse it is like to deprive my child of baked beans for six hours.Six hours is the length of time between meals, lunch noon, dinner at six you literally say child abuse

As a father of two children (5 years and 1 1/2 years) I can tell you now that I personally would not get my children to spend six hours figuring out how to open a can of beans I also try to avoid to criticize other parenting stylesâ ????

Roderick took 23 tweets to try and tell a story as patronizingly as possible. It’s something you would do if you were trying to get readers to hate you

And that made me think this whole story was written on purpose just to bring people to life. A fan of Roderick’s podcast agrees

Hey, I’m going to stick my neck out: this is written in the voice of John on his podcast Roderick on the Line. He tells this story in a heightened way and with a tone that longtime listener both as a joke and as Recognize self-defacement There is a context that is completely lost

This is being followed, especially when you take into account that Ken Jennings from Jeopardy! Fame is his podcast co-host

Very jealous and upset that my podcast co-host is going to be a dictionary entry and I never will

It’s not about parenting, beans or joke letters For me, the moral of the story was perfectly worked out back in 2019 by Twitter user @maplecocaine

Every day there is a main character on Twitter The goal is never to be

Every day a person’s attitude towards Twitter is so hot that it creates an avalanche of criticism and makes that person the main character of the dayâ ????

Although we are in a brand new year full of new hopes and dreams some things stay the same

UPDATE: Jan 3, 2021, 4:51 pm ET: One of the consequences of Twitter being the “main character” of the day is people starting to really get to grips with your background

If old tweets are brought to light by Roderick, it may be time for him to find out about his podcast cohost, Ken Jennings, who recently apologized for his own old, insensitive tweets

UPDATE: Jan 3, 2021, 5:43 pm ET: The Twitter account for the “My Brother, My Brother and I” podcast announced that Roderick’s music would no longer be used on the show

We appreciate John letting us use one of his songs as a theme for MBMBaM for almost a decade, but his response to the situation today is a symbol of a pattern of behavior that goes against the energy we’re trying to bring to you the things we do and so it’s time for us to move on
