Extensive social restrictions have been put in place to slow the spread of COVID-19 in B. were once again extended

The restrictions prohibiting gatherings between people who do not live in the same household, with minor exceptions for those who live alone, now apply at least until February 5

Provincial Health Officer Dr Bonnie Henry announced the expansion of the rules during her live briefing on the COVID-19 pandemic Thursday afternoon

“Now is our time to stay on course,” said Henry during the announcement. “We know what we have to do to turn this curve back down. We managed to do this before this winter break and we have to do it again.”

The renewal applies to all current orders from public health officials, including bans on social gatherings in private homes and all events in public and private locations, and restrictions on sports and fitness activities, Henry said

The provincial health officer did not address directly the ban on personal worship in churches and other places of worship, although that ban is included in the expanded ordinances

Health Minister Adrian Dix spoke directly to religious leaders and communities on Thursday, thanking them for the advice they have given during the pandemic and for the sacrifices they have made by not meeting in person

“We have been guided by your thoughts, advice and generosity, and we do not want these commands to be carried out a minute longer than necessary, but they are necessary now,” he said

Henry suggested adding more orders to the calendar over the next few weeks, depending on the trend in new cases

“We are closely monitoring our progress and if more action is needed we will,” she said, “If we see positive trends in our cases and in our hospital stays and our effects wear off, we will monitor this too. For now, we need to take the line hold “

The convention restrictions were first introduced in the Vancouver Coastal Health and Fraser Health regions in November 7 for a two-week period

But on Dec 7, Henry gave the devastating blow that the orders would stay on for the entire holiday season and last until at least January 8

During Thursday’s announcement, Henry reiterated that most British Columbians have followed public health regulations since they were introduced, but she also offered some targeted words for those who decided to “make an exception for themselves” over the holidays to make “

‘It may seem inconsequential,’ said the health officer. ‘It may not have been done with an understanding of the potential impact, but if 10000 people – a few people in every town, village, or town in our province – making these little concessions for yourself, it exponentially increases our overall risk. “

The coronavirus doesn’t know that you haven’t seen your friends in months or that it is your grandmother’s birthday, said Henry, urging British Columbians to virtually reach out to friends and neighbors for mental and emotional support and connection / p>

“It is compassion and understanding that we need now to get us through these dark days,” she said,
